I guess I'm not much of a progger, I only own 28 of the 50, though there were a few that I wouldn't consider prog
That list actually is fairly eclectic, any list with CAN in the top 10 is ok by me. Not too bad at all, top 10 is fairly predictable but what the hell. Ruins made the list, that's just wonderful.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

This is a list!!!! Lists are not allowed in this section of the board! How dare you!
For what it's worth, I only have eight of them. Nine if you count Phaedra, which I have on vinyl - can't remember how I acquired it, I did not buy it. Haven't heard it for years, of course.
I'm happy, because if only one Porcupine Tree album could make the list, I'm glad it was that one.

So the punks failed to kill it now??
An interesting list with some unpredictable choices at the lower end, some of which I'm unfamiliar with- good to have things like Harmonium on the list. But they are way off on Animals- it came out two years before Thatcher was Prime Minister. They are confusing it with The Final Cut, which does indeed take several pot-shots at said PM.
Personally I think Moving Pictures is way too high up, classic as it is -I think I would personally have Pawn Hearts somewhere around where that placed.
Meh. Fuck that useless rag. It was an abomination in the 70s and 80s. Now with the internet can't even use it for toilet paper.
Quite surprised, not a bad list at all.
They included FM!
High Vibration Go On - R.I.P. Chris Squire
My apologies to admin. Didn't see the message about lists until just now. Oops! That being said, I figured the fact that RS devoted time to our music of choice was quite newsworthy.

I've got 47 of those. Would have omitted at least half of them from such a list. And Hyderomastgroningem is NOT the best Ruins record, dammit.
It's still tentatively eclectic, I'll give 'em that.

Well, the list proves that they know we are here. They just don't know what to do with us.
The older I get, the better I was.
How can Amon Duul 'Yeti' be presented? By all means, that's stretch. And Birds of Fire, Passion Play, Tarkus, Nursery Cryme ignored...These regular 'all-times' lists are quite like horoscopes stuff in a weekly.
I'm impressed. Somebody over at RS actually knows their shit... I'm particularly impressed that they went up to 50 so they really have to put some obscure stuff in there. I would expect RS to come up with a half-assed top 10, but that's it.
Anyway good list. I've got about 40 of 'em.
I wouldn't rule out the list having been cribbed from other sources (many of these are albums that RS never reviewed and wouldn't normally ever reference, but which generally get rated well on other prog sites) but whatever. No, it's not all that similar to a hypothetical top-50 of my own, but I have pretty high opinion of the majority of albums here.
Only three I've never heard - the Carmen, Triumvirate and FM albums - I guess I'll have to check them out.
Did I see a complaint above for Yeti? That hurts! I think that one might make my own top 50, and I always thought it was one of 2 or 3 ADII albums that usually get cited as the band's best.
Mahavishnu might be considered jazz. Inner Mounting Flame and/or Birds of Fire used to regularly make the RS top albums of all-time lists back in the day (electric Miles included) so they probably figured not to bother splitting hairs. But Nursery Cryme - IMO as long as you get SEBTP and TLLDOB on there, you're doing right enough by Genesis.
FM gets on the list and Can makes the top ten...not bad I say.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off
I thought it was an exellent list...
Many surprises...
Enjoy the moment... It's the only way to fly!
Close To The Edge at #5 is way too low. Especially compared to what are ahead of it.
Interesting list. I'm not surprised that Rush and Pink Floyd get so much attention, but it's gratifying to see so many albums included that even casual prog fans have likely not even heard of. We could quibble endlessly about omissions (Focus, for one), but IMO it's overall not a bad list.
What's perhaps most interesting is that RS is even running it, AND including such positive reviews. The worm has turned, indeed. Maybe Yes won't be long for the R&RHOF after all.
Oh, and for the record I own 31 of them.
I'm holding out for the Wilson-mixed 5.1 super-duper walletbuster special anniversary extra adjectives edition.
Pretty good list, tho their knowledge of progressive rock after 1980 is pretty limited. Sounds like one of those conversations where they were getting together and scratching their brains to come up with modern examples and then list their most representative album. Still, at least they made a solid attempt.
You're going to complain about a list from a magazine as widely read as Rolling Stone that includes Happy The Man, 'Yeti', Harmonium and Softs "Third" IN ADDITION to all the usual suspects (deservedly so, but still the usual suspects) like Genesis, Yes, ELP, Rush, etc? There's just no pleasing some people. I thought it was a surprisingly wide-ranging and comprehensive list and more varied than I expect I would get from many people who consider themselves prog cognescenti.
For the record, I currently own 23 of these, which, considering Rolling Stone and considering me, is quite a bit.
YMMV

Since Moving Pictures was picked #3, me writing that Red Baratchetta is one of the most rocking progressive songs wasn't so crazy after all.
(more rocking progressively than progressive rock)
