Prog Ears introduced me to ...

Sure list threads are annoying, and only a few bands can maintain a thread past a couple of pages, and I obsessively post in the Faith No More threads almost alone, and the sports threads are almost always at the top of the new thread button page--so, sure, PE isn't perfect. It's not going to be, and only rose colored glasses ever showed that it once was.

There are literally dozens of bands I wouldn't be listening to because of this forum. In my opinion, despite the sometimes narrow minded inanity that temporarily overcomes it, it is still serving its purpose: Expanding the horizons of new music everywhere.

Just this year, I wouldn't be listening to the following without PE:
    Cardiacs (!!!)
    Crowns Lark
    Knifeworld
    Osanna
Snarky Puppy (I'm seeing them in my neighborhood next week)
    Bob Drake
Trojan Horse (they put out my favorite album of 2014)
    XTC
    Swans
    Tim Bowness

Probably more? That's just one year. PE is awesome and serves its purpose well.
I want to dynamite your mind with love tonight.

If I were to list all the different music that PE has introduced me to, it's a toss-up whether or not I'd get it done before I leave the sphere..

I never even noticed there was a Faith no More thread.

Well I've been here since 1999-2000 and my progressive music knowledge was very limited, so it basically introduced me to everything besides Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson and ELP, but I remember the first CD I bought because of an artist I learned about on PE was echolyn's As The World.

2015, my music collection ranges from everything from Spock's Beard, Enchant, Flower King passing thru VDGG, Cardiacs, Djam Karet to Jagga Jazzist and even one Magma album.

Tons of stuff, way too much to mention individually. Broadly speaking, while I was familiar with the major Italian bands before joining, but I got a much deeper exposure to the Italian, Spanish, South American, French and Japanese Prog scene. There were a series of threads over the years on the music of these countries/areas that were really informative, and I continue to pick things up in PE discussions that were too much to digest back then.

Likewise the Zeuhl and "Avant/RIO" genres. I knew Magma and Henry Cow, but I've learned tons about other groups in these general "styles," and continue to pick up a lot here.

I'm comfortable buying music over the internet, but it is virtually impossible to "browse" on the Prog vendor sites, or even worse Amazon, etc. The weekly or periodic vendor updates are thus extremely helpful to keep abrest of newly released stuff. But I find PE threads are the next best way to call attention to things that might be of interest to me, and that has somewhat take the place of "browsing" in record stores, or talking in person with your friends about music you like.

Pretty much most of the prog I've bought in the last 10 years which is probably 70% of my collection. I knew the big names and some others such as Hawkwind and Gong but little else.

The combination of old prog catalogs, rock encyclopedias and books, RMP, this site, Progarchives and attending festivals over the years has opened the doors to many prog bands I would not know if I just listened to the radio or didn't take the initiative to investigate(which actually started in the late 80's for me). But yeah this site has exposed me to a lot of stuff over the years I just can't really say specifically what.

Hard to say, but it's usually the same 5 or 6 names suggesting it!! Not that it's necessarily a bad thing ...
