I'd say that symphonic rock's parents were equally The Moody Blues and The Nice.

Forgot how good that one was...gave it a listen last night. Fantastic synth leads over tons of mellotron...can't understand a single thing she's singing but I love it

Well, some people consider them proto prog.

Well no, I think they were symphonic rock bands but whether they were symphonic prog bands(as in the full genre of the seventies of the YES and Genesis variety)is another story. Personally, I think the Nice were maybe the first full symph prog band while the Moodies were more of a symphonic art rock(or proto prog) band but that's just my opinion.

heh... DOFP actually had a Symphony Orchestra play as segues between the Pop/Rock tunes and perhaps gave The Nice (the first actual Symph band) their idea,... but yeah, The Moody Blues were a pretty ordinary Pop/Rock band aside from that Ochestra segue thing on DOFP
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Moody Blues or The Enid....cannot decide

Also, Sarah Brightman, Tarja Turunen, pretty much anything Arjen Lucassen is involved in...
