    5 bands are ridiculously not enough, there are way too many.

    I too prefer the Weather Report periods whithout Jaco.
    I like the periods with Jaco, just prefer the others. They were more 'open'.

    Phlox is an excellent newer fusion band.

    They remind me of a really agressive & modern Soft Machine.

    Easy to omit big contributors on a 5 list! (Magma, Area, VDGG, Fripp/KC, Ornette, Miles Davis, Sonny Sharrock, Holdsworth I.O.U.) ...since recordings are generally the main window available you have for playing along, there's at least some reason behind listing a few that made a big crater or hit new neurons. (Anyone interested in harping on about taxonomic minutiae of what is or is not fusion is welcome to petulantly fire away...w/ any luck maybe you'll dig something mentioned that you haven't checked out yet).
    -John McLaughlin (TW Lifetime through MO Birds of Fire)
    -Soft Machine (1 through Bundles)
    -Fred Frith (Henry Cow Legend through Massacre Funny Valentine)
    -Frank Zappa (Hot Rats through Grand Wazoo)
    -Weather Report (1st through Sweetnighter)
    For sure quite a bit of foundational stuff happened outside the above (or any other) 5 list.

    Maybe not best, but these are all great and worthy of being mentioned at least... SBB is one of the most consistent and longest living instrumental based bands ever, although they're only partly fusion...
