I really don't think I'm qualified to buy a huge ass box set.
I really don't think I'm qualified to buy a huge ass box set.
They're not all huge-ass. I think only two have qualified for that.
I think a nice place to start is with the Sunshine Daydream Blu-Ray. Such nice packaging, and a really nice 3CD/BD set of a 1972 outdoor concert featuring nude hippies, etc.. Great documentary footage too.:

I'm not sure the RFK box is a required purchase for a lot of people, given the year, the setlist, etc. I agree that it doesn't look all that "hot". I will get it because I was there and I think it will bring back some memories for me of that period when I would go see them whenever they were in town. As we all know, Dead set lists can look drab on paper, but then the playing is so "hot", everything moves up to a different level. I don't remember these shows specifically (so it will be nice to revisit), but I do remember several really fun RFK shows where I brought unsuspecting friends and they surprised themselves by having a good time. It almost certainly was "hot" in the temperature sense of the word, as I think the PR blurb mentions. So many fun/funny Dead memories...can't wait! At some point, maybe every Dead show will be available? I look forward to hanging out with the Dead and my younger self!
Perhaps, but they're still pretty substantial-ass. Especially if you feel compelled to keep the cool decorated shipping boxes they come in. I've been buying them all since missing out on the Fillmore '69 box, and the first few (the 9-CD Winterland sets and the Warlocks wooden box) were nice and compact. But everything since the (utterly wonderful) Europe '72 monstrosity has been seriously encroaching on the limited real estate in my secret underground bunker.

I sold both my Europe box and the 30 trips box on eBay.
I just can't be bothered anymore.
I was on the fence since October when Dead.net released last-year's big-ass boxed set, "Listen To The River: St. Louis '71 '72 '73." I could tell, somehow, that the 13,000 weren't going to sell out for some time, unlike a lot of these sets. The one from the previous year was kind of fugly, and this one didn't look very distinguished, or sound terribly compelling. However, I finally started to think how I'd feel if it did sell out and I hadn't gotten a copy at the original price (about $175) and needing/wanting to pay through the nose for it, and I finally ordered it.
It arrived a few days ago, and I have to say it's much nicer than it looked from the photos they'd released! As far as the box itself, and the design of it, it's actually one of the most attractive and well-constructed they've done. I'm still on the first concert (of seven), and it sounds great! So I'm pretty happy, and feel like I made the correct and fondleacious decision.

I like this era without Mickey tbh. Bill is a great drummer and they sound tighter overall
Bertha from the Dec 71 sounds great. Singing was on the end...yikes. Jerry had problems or something at the beginning of his solo, but then ripped after the sound was back! Love it.
^ Your bumping this thread made me finally preorder the NEWEST Dead Bigass Boxed Set: IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN ’81, ’82, ’83 (17CD) !
Gotta represent for the homies, am I right?

While I tend to buy dead box sets as high res FLACs these days, I've got a good number of older ones, and have to say that they do a really good job at making each box set look both great...and different from those that came before. Some are better designed than others, but I appreciate the work they put into them. So I'm pleased that they won the Grammy for the MSG 81! 82, 83 set...even if I have the FLAC high res digital set so don't have the booklet ...and I must admit that for those paying for the digital versions, especially the FLACs, they ought to provide a pdf of the accompanying booklet.

It's terrific. I must admit that their drug use is a bit obvious, especially in '81, when the tempos are a little, um, accelerated. But the set lists and laying are both terrific throughout every show.
I don't think you'll be disappointed, especially for a period that is relatively undocumented officially by dead.net.
