ELP & Tarkus hands down ! The confusion about the ...is it ELP or isn't it track added to the interest !
I just ordered the Time Wasters album after having heard a lot of good things about it. But I'll be surprised if it arrives until mid-January, Russian post is very slow on the holidays.
Mr. Frog's Baba Scholae.
Hermann Szobel - Szobel
Het Pandorra Ensemble - III
Randy Roos - Minstrel
Just my biased opinion...
Loved the Szobel, thanks for that.
Dun - Eros
I didn't realize the Fusion Orchestra was out yet? You're talking about the Rise Above Relics reissue right?
Not to put too fine a point on this, but Baba Scholae isn't technically a reissue. Only in that it was never released to begin with (though interestingly, since Labat was part of Utopia, Rundgren considered it for Bearsville Records back in the day. Now that would have been something!). So it's really an archival release. And a darn good one!
Dun, of course, had been reissued before by Soleil Zeuhl (in 2000). So while it was a great reissue, it wasn't really a new one.
2012 was a decent year for reissues, but not as strong as 2011.
The 3 that Ken released and mentioned were all excellent choices, especially the Het Pandorra Ensemble.
As well there was (sticking with CDs only and staying away from archival stuff just to be consistent):
Silberbart - 4 Times Sound Razing (Long Hair). This was released at the end of 2012, so that's why it may have escaped attention
Toshiyuki Miyama & New Herd's "Tsuchi No Ne (Nippon Densetsu No Naka No Shijou)" (Nippon Columbia). Big band jazz meets psych rock. Crazy title from 1973.
Tamarisk - Frozen in Time. Both their cassettes reissued by the band themselves
William Sheller - Lux Aeterna (Omni). This is a far superior reissue to the barebones one on CBS that came out in the early 90s and is as obscure the album.
Mike Selesia - Flavor (Japan Shout!). If you guys like the idea of Krautrock meets jazz - look into this title.
Franck Dervieux - Dimension M (ProgQuebec). This should be on a lot of folks Top list of 2012
Poliphony - s/t (Audio Archives)
Serge Bringolf Strave - Vision (Soleil Zeuhl)
Catch Up - Birth of the Second Life (Japan Production Dessinee). Excellent second album. First one was reissued by Crippled Dick Hot Wax a few years ago
Eleventh House - Level One (Wounded Bird)
Catherine Ribeiro & Alpes - No. 2 (as part of a box). Not a great reissue, but a great album that was reissued for the first time.
Pancake - No Illusions (Garden of Delights). 3rd album and my favorite of the 3.
Pete and Royce - Suffering of Tomorrow / Days of Destruction (MusicBazz)
Mythos - Quasar (Sireena)
There were a few albums slated for reissue in 2012 that were tabled for this year. There is a lot to look forward to!
NRG-No Reasons Given
I'm only going by the story in the liner notes from the Laser's Edge edition. I'm writing from memory so details of my summary may be wrong.
Szobel was a boastful and brash youngster who walked into Columbia recording studios and proclaimed that he was the world's best pianist or something like that. Somehow he got the attention of Roberta Flack, who made some introductions and he was signed to Arista. But as big a musical genius as he was he had difficulty getting along with people ( a not uncommon combination) and majorly upset the musicians he worked with (one of them wrote some of the notes). Arista pulled the plug on a 2nd album and he never did professional music again. He went missing in Florida in the 1990s; I don't recall if he was ever found.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?
There are only 10 types of people in the World, those who understand binary and those that don't.
The only 2012 reissue I've bought so far was Dun - Eros and its fantastic to finally have that on CD. I was not willing to pay outrageous prices for the 2002 reissue, and downloads are totally out of the question for me, so its great to own it.
