Thread: Favorite summer albums

David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees, Gone to Earth

    Rain Tree Crow

The Rain Parade - Emergency Third Rail Power Trip

The Dream Syndicate - Medicine Show

Stomu Yamashta's GO, GO Live From Paris

    Vangelis - "earth"

Jon Hassell / Brian Eno - Fourth World Vol. 1 Possible Musics

    Orb - Orbvs Terrarvm

    Orbital - In Sides

Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey / Garvey's Ghost

    Culture - Two Sevens Clash

    Abyssinians - Satta Massagana

    Peter Tosh - Legalize It

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew, On The Corner, Get Up With It, Agartha & Pangea

All good picks. Quicksilver was also mentioned they had a song in '75 called 'They Don't Know' from 'Solid Silver' that just personified summer for me, for the next several years. That song has always held so much nostalgia for me strictly on just how summery it feels, makes me long for the fun summer I probably have never quite experienced, making it almost painful. But in an almost good way

It's A Beautiful Day is another good call. So is anything by 'The Honey Trees', or 'The Sundays'.

Lots to love in the top part of your list (the bottom half isn't too shabby either), but I would add in Secrets Of The Beehive, even though it is possibly more of an Autumn album, it's with me most of the year actually. I've never seen The Dream Syndicate or Rain Parade mentioned here, but they are two great albums.

My number 1 summer album is Virginia Astley's "In Gardens Where We Feel Secure", I play that many a night with the windows open and the breeze wafting in, sublime.

Mention of the Dream Syndicate reminds me of the Dream Academy, whose first self-titled album is good summer listening, once you get past the opening track "Life in a Northern Town", which definitely has a bleak wintry feel.

Yeah, 'In Places On The Run' is fantastic.

Just an aside - anyone else agree with me that "Reelin' In The Years" still is the quintessential drivin' around song. Free's "All Right Now" comes in second. IMHO.

Quasi - Warning Even if this post veers the thread into songs vs. albums, we know it will eventually get back on the tracks.

This is one of my all time favourite non-prog albums. I guess its pretty obscure these days. I too think of it as a summer album. I waited years for it to get a CD reissue, having to make do with infrequent spins of my vinyl copy before it finally happened a couple of years ago.

Having said that, my natural inclination would be towards 60s stuff for summer albums:

Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing at Baxters

The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers

    CSN - 1st

    Santana - Abraxas

Oh yeah! Notorious Byrd Bros for absolutely sure, but the others are ace summer songs as well. Might I add If I Could Only Remember My Name on top of all this; "Laughing" and "Traction in the Rain" are two of my ultimate Gin-Tonic tunes (in a frozen glass) on a sweaty Saturday afternoon in July.

I'm with you Geez....,Steely Dan in general is great drivin around with the windows down music.

I was crankin Kid Charlemagne on a nice warm afternoon last week!

Possibly - which may explain why it's one of the few Dan songs I can't stand. It has none of that smooth tight jazzy feel that they were known for. But yeah, you can tap your hands on the steering wheel to it...

It gets trotted out almost daily on "drive time" radio, along with Roadhouse Blues and a couple of other standbys.

I love some Steely Dan in the car, but Reelin' In The Years is not my favourite, possibly suffers from the over-played syndrome, as does All Right Now for that matter... To me at least... Individual classic rock songs that may catch me driving like a nutter include Highway Star and Take It Off The Top

I think I'd take "Do It Again" over "Reelin'" in the car.

It's hard to argue with that.

Lots of Steely Dan is great driving music, but this song in particular has always held a special place in my heart.
