Seems the surgeon in question is a bowl cancer specialist.

hope John will be well soon. prayers to him.
Wishing a full and speedy recovery for John.
A friend of mine who's a friend of his posted on her Facebook page last night that he'd come through the surgery ok.
I had no idea he was having health problems. Wishing John a speedy and uneventful recovery.
Regards,
Jon
Hopefully bowl cancer is no worse than bowel cancer, which can be pretty serious because of the difficulty in surgery & recovery. Sorry, that was mean. Best of luck to John.
Wetton's webpage has now announced:
Good that the surgery was successful, but terrible news that he has cancer. Size alone doesn't tell you a lot about a colon tumour, but large is generally not a good sign. He may be receiving further treatment and prognosis is far from straightforward. On May 16, John underwent surgery for the successful removal of a 1 kilo [2.2lb] malignant mass. John wishes to extend his thanks to Mr Chan and his team. John is also beyond grateful for the wonderful wishes and prayers received. John is recuperating. After these reports I am amazed that John looked and sounded as well as he did last month at the NYC UK show!
Hopefully the surgery removed all the cancer and it will be back to business as usual for John. One of the few classic prog era vocalists with 100% of his vocal chops intact.
