One of the truly great American songwriters, along with Don McLean, Paul Simon and John Sebastian. (Not meant to be an all-inclusive list.)

    Warren Zevon.

I think the man wrote the most intriguing lyrics I can recall.
Who else could write a line like, "Little old lady got mutilated late last night" and still make you smile?

Not many fans here I would guess, but for my money one of the best "storytelling" bands out there right now are Drive By Truckers. Stories of the south that are like little mini-movies. To me they are one of the torch bearers of modern southern rock.

Agreed, Zevon was a lyrical mastermind.

    John Mellencamp

I'm not a huge Mellencamp fan. I have a couple cd's of his, but listening to his lyric's it struck me how good he really is.

Give some names of ones unappreciated.
I hated Mellencamp when he first started out, but after he matured a little bit I would agree that he became a strong lyricist.

I'm in the same canoe. The "unappreciated" in the title is putting me off. I only know who I like and don't like. I can't honestly think of a lyricist I like who isn't appreciated...because s/he will of course be appreciated by those who like him/her...The thread title almost creates a paradox in my already scattered brain...box..or bag...of stuff. So I findz myzelf thinking of lyricistz that I think are good but not well known. In which case, I'll say them boys wot doez write the wordz for Starz in Battledrezz.

Right on the money!!! I'll throw in Sufjan Stevens and John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats) while I'm at it.

Agreed Peter. ^ They're all Richard Larcombe's doing.
Also, given that Leonard Cohen, Elvis Costello, Lou Reed et al, while brilliant, are hardly under appreciated, I must weigh in with a plus one for David Lee Roth.
The on the last VH album he comes on like some great beat poet, while my favourite are the lyrics to Big Trouble.
Wonderfully beguiling. I wish I'd written them!

Agreed. Great band!!! And I'll put The Hold Steady on that same level of storytelling brilliance.

Did you know john Darnielle has written a novel? I heard him speak at the Perth Writers' festival earlier this year. Sounds like a very dark-themed novel - title has something to do with a white van.

Few are as much of a complete package as Mike; brilliant composer, virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and great lyricist. I suppose some would consider his singing to be an acquired taste, but I think he's a great singer as well.

Two of my favorites as well!

    Some others I really enjoy:

    Donald Fagen and Walter Becker

    Neil Finn

    Dave Dobbyn

    Ted Leonard
Eric: "What the hell Hutch, it's all Rush, what if we wanted a little variety?"

Hutch: "Rush is variety, Bitch! Rule number one: in my van, its Rush! All Rush, all the time...no exceptions."

    From "Fanboys" 2009.

I didn't realise that, but I must admit I did feel I recognised some lyrics, as with some of the lyrics Cardiacs and Sea Nymphs borrowed from Blake for example.
