Who are these people? (Cryptic quiz)

Similar to the cryptic album quiz, but the answers are names of people in music - people reasonably well known and/or mentioned often on this board. Some are definitely NOT prog.

    1. Sexually charged male, recently acquired.
    2. Breaking news: logs in the water!
    3. Genuflect audibly, with long and short noises.
    4. Wide bird.
    5. Plant exploding in cataclysmic fashion.
    6. Sound pickup, the pasture has been there for some time.
    7. Swallow-like bird at the pub?
    8. Move up and down rapidly with the fungus.
    9. Catholic boy moves quickly in the forest.
    10. He/she has the final say in choosing the music at Christmas!

Are there some band names in there too? Or are they all personal names?

No. You are sort of on the right track.

I'm off to the gym now, so you have a couple of hours to solve them without further input from me.

2 & 4 remain unsolved. Both are pop not prog; they are what the music press incorrectly refer to as "R&B artists".

Re no. 4: a song by this artist was extremely controversial last year, for several reasons.

"Stupid bird" would have been a valid clue, also.

Maybe it's not universal, but in this country a "Mick" is slang for a Catholic, no doubt due to the fact that "Michael" is a very common Irish name, and that Irish people are (or were) commonly roman Catholic. Or possibly it comes from the "Mc" that precedes many Irish surnames.

The term has fallen out of use somewhat in recent times. On looking it up I find that it's considered derogatory, but I've never thought of it that way - when I have heard it used it's just been shorthand reference meaning Irish and Catholic, much the same way "Aussie" is used for "Australian".

    You did ask.

Okay, for the Irish in Ireland & the UK Mick is a major insult used by the British!
If a people don't use a term for themselves then you can be sure it's an insult.
The equivalent of yank and aussie is paddy not mick.
