I think this is true. I cut my teeth listening to The Beatles on a mono Panasonic cassette player/recorder. It couldn't really have sounded better to me.

    Luxury.
You were lucky to have a mono cassette player. I used to have to listen on a reel-to-reel tape deck that had to be wound by hand.

We had those too. We never recorded music on them but we had fun with those reel-to-reel sets. We recorded all sorts of nonsense and foolishness.

My buddy had one of those. The echo chamber and feedback was lots of fun.

I remember one time I accidentally turned my Panasonic cassette recorder into a guitar amp. It's true. I was trying to record something and the "play" and "rec" keys got stuck between the up and down position, then I heard some feedback. I started talking into the mic and my voice came out of the speaker. Then that lightbulb on the top o' me head illuminated and I thought ....what if I put the mic in the sound hole of my cheap, POS acoustic guitar? And there you go. I was creating the cheapest, distorted, feedbacky noises you could imagine. True story, and hilarious.

I dreamed about winding tapes by hand. I had to listen to The Beatles being played at a neighbor's house, using paper cups and some string!

Paper cups?! Man, you had it good! We had to use athletic cups. Talk about getting an earful.

At least you got athletic cups that weren't in use! Me, I had to put my ear up to... Ugh. Too horrible to recount.

I figure this is more like what you had to listen to.
