Hey there! Prog girl looking for some new music!

Hey all! New to the site. 29 yr old gal and musician with a vast taste in music. Recently a friend of mine introduced me to transatlantic, Neal morse and some other good stuff. Looking for some suggestions to fill my iPod up with! Hit me!

Neal Morse-era Spock's Beard seems like the next logical step

    try some Anglagard
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

Are you looking for the newer prog, or recommendations on the classic stuff? How familiar are you with the old stuff?

Geezer beat me to it with Marillion but keep in mind their catalog stretches back three decades and two very different (and very good) lead singers.

    New(er) stuff might be:

    Astra - The Black Chord
    Diagonal - The Second Mechanism
Big Big Train - English Electric Pt 1 and Pt 2
Mars Hollow - World in Front of Me
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart

I shoulda asked, did you want stuff that sounds very much the same as those you mentioned or are you looking to explore the wider variety of Progressive Rock styles?

I mentioned Anglagard because, even tho they are Symphonic style Prog, they are quite different from the ones you mentioned.
Other styles of Prog music include Canterbury, Fusion, Zeuhl, Spacerock, Avant, Afro, Electronic, Metal and Folk (to name a few)

Anglagard also have a gal in the band

Welcome. How vast is your taste in music? I'm wondering if I can recommend anything other than stuff similar to Morse, etc.

It's always cool when people discover prog by accident. I doubt it happens too often although I suppose to some degree we all discovered the scene by accident. I've been into this stuff since I was a teen in the eighties. Anyway, you need to go back and discover the basics asap especially YES, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Genesis. Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention Rush and also Pink Floyd. Also, try some ELP and Jethro Tull for good measure. For newer bands Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard(already mentioned)and of course the Flower Kings. Phideaux is a very good newer band too with a slight psych edge at times. Move on from there and pay attention to what others say on here as far as specific recommendations. Congratulations on making a wonderful discovery that only a handful of lucky individuals get to experience.
