Happy Family was suggested by someone else... I like it, but perhaps it's more Avant than Fusion
Nebelnest is French and twisted and I don't give a toss if anyone thinks it's Zeuhl or not
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

I totally agree and You can add Ruins to that list of non-JR/F groups
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Happy Family is somewhat Zeuhl through their Present influence, IMHO... But is Present really Zeuhl??

As for Nebelnest (and Xaal), it's mostly Crimson-influenced, but JR/F enough to fit your needs

I tend to agree that those bands are at the non fusiony end of the Zeuhl gene pool. Still great, I love the full range, they have enough influences to be included in the discussion.

    Not really for both.
Zeuhl influence on HF mainly comes from their former bassist Miyano Tatsuya being very strongly influenced by Jannick Top / Bernard Paganotti's style.
Compositionally they don't have too many similarity with Magma, but stronger influence from Univers Zero / Present school with loudness, energy of hard rock.

Which is an admirable attitude towards stuff. However, you'd might want to check out Koenji's fourth album first, Angherr Shisspa, seeing how this actually *IS* highly fusion-laden and more or less forsakens the previously prevalent heaviness (although remains quite manic still).

I never understood why some of these bands were labelled as Zeuhl when they sounded nothing like Magma? To me there is one true Zeuhl band

I'm rather late to the party, so I hope that someone is still reading this.

I am actually of the camp who does not particularly like jazz/fusion, so I'd be very interested in recommendations for Zeuhl music that is the least jazz/fusion influenced (besides Shub Niggurath, which I already know).

Also, for reference, Kohntarkosz (studio version) is far and away my favorite Magma album (and piece).

    Many thanks.

Try Unit Wail, Guapo - 5 Suns, Archaia, Koenjihyakkei, Eskaton & Combat Astronomy - Dreams No Longer Hesitate. Not much jazz influence in that lot.
