One of the stars in a reasonably priced car on Top Gear one time was a blues musician named Seasick Steve, who plays an instrument that was fashioned for him from a pair of car hubcaps, with a dowel for a neck, and I think one or two strings. He didn't plug it in, so we didn't hear how it sounds through an amp, but acoustically, he seemed to get a good slide guitar performance from the instrument.

That's not as impressive as the carrot clarinet!

For homemade instruments made from very basic items, though, it's hard to beat the "Fosterphone", an empty beer carton played by tapping with hands and fingers, and the favoured instrument of this guy.

Peter Finger's first LP was recorded on a series of self-made slide guitars. They sound wonderful.

Didn't know about Peter Finger, but it sounds good & I see it's produced by Stefan Grossman.
