Tina, have you ever met Tony Northlands?
Another vote for there is no comparing these albums. I have them both and enjoy them both. But, they are two different beasts.
If you are referring to the YouTube clips, they are no longer available.
That Tina tried to make the entire album available was the tell wrt her being involved in the band; nobody tied to the band - members, label, publicist, management - would make the entire album available for free.
And, to Tina: shame on you.
Reverting for a moment to discussion of the music: I did find a clip with a promo video about 10 minutes long with excerpts from all the tracks. I also read the reviews on Amazon.
I think I agree with the person who gave it 4 stars and said they would have liked to give 3&1/2 stars. This is NICE music - problem is perhaps it's a little too nice, and there does not seem to be much variation, a problem with a work that has long passages without vocals. The only part where things seem to change a little is the song "A Rainy Day on Dean Street", and I don't like that song much, I find it pretty bland.
So, my initial impression still stands. I feel as though I should really like this album, I almost feel guilty for not liking it more than I do. Not a bad album by any means, and certainly well executed - but not adventurous enough for me, I think I would get bored with it quickly.
Pink Floyd's The Endless River is a good point of comparison. The style is similar to Northlands in places, yet for all the criticism that the Floyd swan song generated, I found it surprisingly easy to listen to right through without tiring of it. The mood is pretty mellow throughout, but there are enough little changes of tempo and clever effects to sustain my interest.
I would, when entire albums are made available on it for free.
And I'll call them even dodgier if, as is rumored about when they offer their for-fee service to compete with Spotify, artists who don't participate in for-fee will be unable to use the for-free to post promotional videos, EPKs, etc.
But irrespective of that, ever since they removed the 10-minute limit - plus not really giving a shit about what is posted unless someone complains, YouTube is abused by "fans" who think it's somehow good for the band to have their entire album up there for free, as was the case here....
But back to music: Again, with the comparisons about which is better. To the OP: what, exactly, are your criteria for assessing whether one album is better than another? That you like it more? Well, it's fair enough that you like one more than another, but that doesn't make it better.
I'lll admit to being new to Tony Patterson, but from what I've heard I will say I prefer Wilson by a long stretch, because the whole thing just seems less sophisticated, too homogenous and lacking in variety. Something you cannot accuse Wilson of, I'd say.'
But that doesn't make Wilson's better. I just prefer it. These "which is better" threads really are counter-productive because we live in a world big enough to have both of these records, for those who prefer one over the other.
Tina, music may well be art, but art doesn't put food on the table of the musicians who make it. So that is, frankly a load of horse manure. Yes, folks should buy and if you do, then good for you. But by making entire albums available for download or streaming for free, you are taking food off the musician's table.
Making some music available is, indeed, a good promotional tactic that many artists do use. But to make the entire album available? Sorry, but more people listen for free than go out an buy the record when they hear it and like it. That's why this is such a problem.
So yes, music is art. But it is also commerce; musicians do it (at least many of them) to make a living. To dismiss this is a mistake and disrespects the artist's hard work, time and money invested to make it.
Music, after all, doesn't grow on trees. Real people have to make it, and it costs them money to do so. Pirating their music and making it available for free without their consent is just that: Piracy. So please don't try to position it as anything else, as you are woefully mistaken.
You did when you made such an outrageous comment, and one that is the typical way that folks who don't pay for music use to make themselves feel like they're not thieves.
Plus, Tina, you are on a discussion board, so if you make a comment it's one of the purposes of a board to engender discussion. You don't like the answer you got from Scott (nor, likely, me), then you should not be on a board like this. He has every right to respond.
Me, I appreciate it.
I agree with some of what you say. I appreciate it.
Maybe I'm wrong, & I removed the link. But they also needs to look at themselves. There are many sites like torrent available even discographys for download!! I'm not the admin of this sites. Why do you charged the fault on me?
I told u can listen & download but u should buy it original.
However, Actions speak louder than words!
I must say that I enjoyed this record a lot. I don't think the comparision with Wilson was totally wrong. The album is also available on Spotify (nice way to find new music. I checked this directly when I started to read this)
Not so far away from Storm Corrosion sometimes...
Jkelman, fair point on You Tube, they take no responsibilty for the rampant and very obvious piracy hosted there. And now that Google generates a lot of money their "do no harm" mantra has become open to intepretation.
Anyway back to this thread - actually no, the OP has kind of lost me, it's all gone a bit weird and I'm out.
I charge you with the fault of posting the link. No, you are not the person who made it available, but by sharing the link you are tacitly saying it's ok to do what the site has done and make the album available illegally. If you are a fan of the artist, as you say you are - and ice no doubt you are - then I think it's your responsibility to support the artist any way you can... And that includes NOT encouraging folks to stream or download albums for free. You may buy albums you hear this way and like, but plenty do not,
So, hope that explains why I hold you responsible,
