One more thing we’d like to share with you: we still get asked about transcriptions and backing tracks all the time. Do we have them for Culture Clash and the debut eponymous album? For every instrument (on Culture Clash, at least)? Yes we do! Our friends at Jam Track Central have all of this stuff, and they’ve got a little thing going this month where you’ll get 30% off if you use the discount code AR30 before the end of March.

Hope I am in town for the 8/10 show with Travis Larson.
That will be a Smokin' Show!

I could be at an in-laws family reunion in the middle of Iowa.
I would have to be smoking something to enjoy that 1/10 as much as the Aristocrats.

It's a small room....some small tables at each side if you get there early.

You can see from the seats (I am assuming they still have a raised stage).

Thinking about going to see them in Philly. I know both Govan and Minnemann, but haven't heard this band. What should I expect?

Guthrie Govan has a fretless electric guitar I think it's a Vigier. The guy is just awesome.

If you've heard those two, you should have some idea of what to expect, just add an accomplished bass player. It's very improvisation oriented rock-fusion played by virtuosos. If you appreciate that sort of thing, you'll dig them. I have their first album and to be honest, I'm not crazy about the tunes, but damn, those guys can play! Seeing them live was much more exciting than listening to the album, at least to me. Guthrie and Marco have ridiculous chops, but they're musical enough to keep things interesting. IMO... but of course!

He does, but he rarely picks it up, fortunately. Sorry, but as much as I dig fretless bass, that's how much I don't dig fretless guitar.

Juilliard meets Curtis meets Berkelee. I tried to get into this but it didn't hold my attention. INCREDIBLE, INCREDIBLE musicians tearing it up and having a blast in the process, yet it feels cliched in a way.

I agree that they're better live than on disc.

That would be interesting to see. The only time I've seen someone play fretless guitar is Tom Monda from Thank You, Scientist. He puts it to amazing use on the track In the Company of Worms. He only uses it on that one track, as far as I know. Probably best not to overuse it, as you say. There is a solo at about the 4 minute mark.

there are vids on youtube where he uses it on a tune from exotic cakes. The dude seems to operate it pretty well! I'm sure if its got strings he can play it. Frets or not.
And i also agree, their music can be a challenge, but i'm in to see them live. This is one band chock full of monster chops!

Well, yeah, I think any guitar player should see him live, the guy is amazing! I wonder if any other guitar player on Earth has studied the history of electric guitar playing as thoroughly as Guthrie. He can virtually play any style, knows every guitar technique known to man and has more identifiable influences than anybody! In a way, he's Allan Holdsworth's opposite; Holdsy seems as if he never listened to any other guitar player while Guthrie has listened to (and absorbed) every guitar player!

Um... Erotic Cakes. Yep, he does make it sound good! I think David Fiuczynski (Hiromi's Sonicbloom, Screaming Headless Torsos), a guitar player I usually enjoy, soured me on fretless guitar. I've heard Pat Metheny use one with less than stellar results too. Here's the video. Unfortunately, it devolves into the three of them playing rubber chickens. Which is another problem I have with The Aristocrats; some of their attempts at zany humor falls flat imo. I love that they're monster players who don't take themselves seriously, but some of it is a little too silly for my tastes (and this is coming from a Three Stooges fan). Oh yeah, the video:
