"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM
Neurosis has always had a "visual artist" who was credited as a full member of the band who would do album covers and provide visual backings for their shows. For a while, it was Josh Graham who went on to form Red Sparowes and then A Storm of Light, both of whom he also did the visuals for. I saw ASoL a few years back and the visuals were a pretty integral part of the show
Klaatu/Ted Jones. Most of them, anyway.

And although not the subject of this thread, famously Joni Mitchell and Neil Young have painted many of their own album covers
Astra has used Arik Roper for both of their album covers so far -- The Weirding and The Black Chord -- to great effect. His art is a perfect match for the music, much like Dean was for Yes in their prime.
Grant Hart did almost all the Husker Du album covers
Lest I forget, Emerald Web licensed paintings by Bruce Ricker for four of their albums, Valley of the Birds, Nocturne, Lights of the Ivory Plains and Dreamspun, and the compilation Traces of Time.
The painting used for the Nocturne cover.

God forbid Hugh was responsible for FBN! That's one of the most heinous covers ever, imo
Everon and Gregory Bridges, except North
I don't know. I kind of like it. I like most of Hugh's Rush covers. Maybe my least favorite front covers are Hold Your Fire and Counterparts, but the I really like the rest of the art on each of those. Seems like they went for simplicity on each of those for the fronts.
Here's something topical to the relationship of Hugh Syme and Rush.

I really like Ayreon's association with cover artist Jef Bertels:
... there are several albums with this style and it works for me!

David Levitan did albums for Jeff Berlin, T Lavitz and The Players. His covers often had glass-balls.

Tom Lietzau did (almost?) all covers for Light Coorporation:
the firm 'Hypnosis' did many covers for Pink Floyd & Alan Parsons.
Totally not prog, but Morrissey of the totally great The Smiths designed all their singles and album sleeves with Jo Slee, I think they're brilliant.
