2022 FIFA World Cup: What the…?

Apparently this might take place from late November to late December. Great idea. Not.

The 2022 World Cup will take place at the end of this year? Has someone invented a time machine or have I been asleep for over seven years?

Definitely weird, but it has to as the average temperature in Quatar (sp?) in the summer is 125 degrees F.

On their bid, Qatar said new technology would allow them to have outdoor air conditioners to make the tournament possible. They now say it isn't possible.

It's just a game. No playoff game, just a game. And the crowd in this pub is as loud as a rock concert.

Bunch of fanatics here wearing white jerseys that say "Fly Emirates. " Which team is it? The other jersey says QATAR.

Guess where the money is. And no it's not just a game. It's Sox Yankees on steriods with political and cultural significance.

Barcelona are sponsored by Qatar, Real Madrid are sponsored by Emirate Airlines. Yes Barcelona are sponsored by a country, an oil rich country at that. For perspective Newcastle are sponsored by a payday lender.

Must have been one of the lamest games I ever saw, what does Quatar have to do with football? Aren't they supposed to be the Asian Champions?
How did they do that (Japan and South Corea have really good teams)?

You're asking why Qatar is IN the tournament at all? host nation always gets a spot.

They bribed a whole bunch of people to get the tournament, that's why they are in. They looked pretty awful from what I saw. Guess they couldn't buy a team to go with their shiny new stadiums.

I'm fully aware of everything football, it's the no. 1 game over here. I was questioning the interest of the Quatar people in the sport.
The audience was mostly made of ordered (paid) fans, all others went away early (apart from the Ecuador fans).

Also the team played as they never have played a game before..

Very excited for the tournament. Great second goal by Ecuador. Certainly an amazing stadium for the game. Qatar didn't show their best, I watched them at the Gold Cup and they looked very good. Afif is a joy to watch but they just couldn't get the ball to him enough. Good game plan by Ecuador. Qatar doesn't have too much of a football history but it has to start somewhere (they were very impressive in the AFC.) The same could be said about the US in 1994. I remember watching those games and the announcers had to explain basic rules of the game to the viewers.

What are your favorite World Cup music albums? I have a few of the official albums and they usually aren't that great, heavy dance/pop music.
My favorite is an un-official CD for the 1998 World Cup called "Football Africa"

Anyone else got a favorite Football World Cup CD?

Like you know where I am and my background either.

Your question was at best rambling.

If you are going to move this beyond football into why Qatar has the cup etc. - then likely this thread will get closed. I guess I had hoped you were actually asking what I answered.....

Why is there a team called Real Madrid... is there a fake one?

I believe Real is Royal in their language. What always kills me is calling new clubs Such and Such United. I assume the old line teams with a United appellation are made of clubs who merged in the distant past. These Johnny Come Lately Uniteds just sound silly.

Newcastle United was the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End I 1892. I happen to be wearing my 1927 replica shirt at the moment, the last time we won the league.

Yes, that would be an example of an old line United who merged in the distant past. I would expect that Manchester United has a similar backstory. The ones that I find ridiculous are ones like MLS teams Atlanta United, D.C. United, and Minnesota United, all of which were named as such as expansion teams. In other words, their team isn't the result of a merger, they just chose the name because there are some successful European franchises who have it in the name.
