Thread: The Ultimate Prog Band

    The Ultimate Prog Band

Imagine you are putting together the Prog band to end all Prog bands, who would be in it?
[you can only have a maximum of one person from an existing band]

    Protein

Peter Gabriel - vocals, flutes, percussion
    Kate Bush - vocals, keyboards
    Francis Dunnery - guitar, vocals
    Mariusz Duda - bass, vocals
    Keith Emerson - keyboards
    Ronald Ottenhoff - saxophone, flute
    Lenny White - drums

OK, I'll play - though usually these kinds of exercises end up being a list of people's favourite individual players, without much regard for whether they would make music together that'd sound any good.
With that thorny issue in mind, I wonder if this band would actually sound half-decent:

Simon Akesson - vocals and keyboards
Anne Marie Helder - vocals, flute, keys, acoustic guitar (i.e. a bit of everything like in Mostly Autumn, but with a much more prominent role)
Joff Winks - guitars, occasional vocals for contrast or harmony with the above
    Kalle Wallner - guitars
Lee Pomery - bass, Taurus pedals and 12-string guitar
    Gavin Harrison - drums

And I'd have Jem Godfrey produce their album.

Doh! Just saw that thing about only having one person from an existing band.
Well, if we're talking about last century prog gods, most of whose original bands are defunct, then of course it would be different:

Steve Walsh: lead vocals and some Hammond
    Andy Latimer: lead guitar
Anthony Philips: twelve-string and acoustic guitars
    Patrick Moraz: piano and moog
Richard Sinclair: bass and some vocals
    Bill Bruford: drums
(Latimer being the only one in an existing band, of course)

A very important consideration. Such fantasy bands tend to be "all-star" aggregations of leaders, frequently ones whose music comes from entirely different premises - for example, Robert Fripp, Keith Emerson, and Christian Vander. With that said, the one way I could imagine such a thing working would be as a memorial: An album of music by someone like Hendrix or Zappa, played by various temporary supergroups.

Which raises the important question: Must all members of this imaginary band currently be alive and active?

And would their vocals be in their current state, or when they were in their glorious prime? The number of singers from the classic prog and rock eras that have most of their pipes intact is pretty small.

I would imagine Tatsuya Yoshida and four clones of Tatsuya Yoshida would make just about the most complex, amazing, unlistenable music ever

    Dodie,
Were not Latimer and Sinclair in the same band at one time?

  11. #11
    Bari,
They must be alive, otherwise you would get a very quiet album.

    Jerjo,
I meant today, if age has made them less vital so be it.

Akesson is a very interesting choice.

I'm quite happy with current setup of Leprous, Haken and Deus ex Machina. The latter being my fav ATM. Piras and Solberg can thrash all other vocalists combined with only half mouth open.

I wanted to start a thread like this but never got to it,
    My fantasy prog band:

David Torn - Guitars, Oud, Looping
Trilok Gurtu - Drums, Cymbals, Percussion and Tabla
Michael Manring - Fretted and Fretless bass , bass pedals (gotta have em in a prog band right?)
    Theo Travis - Flute
    Chris Buzby - Keys

Singer? We dont need no stinking singer (said in faux mexican accent)

Oh man this is a loaded question..

    Christian Vander- Drums
    Kate Bush- Vocals
    Robert Wyatt- Vocals
    Hugh Banton- Organs
Dave Stewart- Fender Rhodes + Synthesizers (not organ)
    Fripp- Guitar
    Jannick Top- Bass Guitar

The sounds that would come out of this group would be gloriously otherworldy..
A vie, a mort, et apres...

Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?
