Thread: Greatest Prog Songs by non Prog Bands

  1. #26
Telegraph Road, Dire Straits. 14 minutes of pure, majestic rock and roll wonder. A simple but powerful story lyrically. But the last five instrumental minutes building to the final fadeout crescendo are nothing short of breathtaking. Brilliant every time I hear it.

I like their first two albums, then they lose me. The opening track on the s/t debut, "Tower," is awesome.

    Surprised this hasn’t turned up:

    Or this:

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...

MOGWAI... Took me a while to really appreciate the laid back style of Mogwai.

Not sure if any of the songs listed would strike me as being a prog song, but here is my entry (feel free to disagree)

Scorpions: Lonesome Crow (the song, not the album)

    Green Day

    The Smashing Pumpkins

I posted this one in the Beck thread, but it's worth one more shout-out:

This is a favorite around our house. My Chemical Romance did a couple of pretty good concept albums. They were pop-punk like Green Day but never got the same level of critical acclaim.

Styx, all the way back to the debut album.

I'll leave you all to decide whether this was prog, or just a bad idea. I think it's cool, but I'm weird.

You can definitely hear the Tull Bricks being laid on this one. (Wait, that sounded wrong…)
"Arf." -- Frank Zappa, "Beauty Knows No Pain" (live version)

hmm... methinks Styx did one too many Prog tunes to be considered in this thread
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

    lynyrd skynyrd - freebird

    David Gates- Suite: Clouds/Rain
Carpenters- Another Song (and the Klaatu cover 'Calling Occupants...')

As for Tommy James And The Shondells already mentioned, the title track of the album (from which the song mentioned comes from) Cellophane Symphony is full-on prog.

To respond to some previous posts: I'd think Uriah Heep is prog (thus Salisbury wouldn't count) and to Relayer56, yes, I'd definitely put April (Deep Purple) on this list. Great tune.

For Zep, no one has said Carouselambra (sp?), best song from their last album.

    Here are some others:
Chicago - Ballet for a Girl from Buchanan
Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station (I think this is more proggier than the others listed), St. Stephen
Heart - Mistral Wind and probably Little Queen
Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Lucifer's Friend - Sorrow, Thus Spoke Oberon, Spanish Galleons
Pat Metheny Group - Half Life of Absolution, among many others
Queen - no one has chimed in with Bohemian Rhapsody, I think it probably qualifies, and The Prophet's Song too
    Al Stewart - Nostradamus

Absolutely, this is a great album side and as about as prog as you can get

    great choice, gorgeous song

    perennial fave of mine:

    the most obvious choice:

a borderline case would be “fool’s overture” by SUPERTRAMP. file under prog-related

These two have already been mentioned.

Glad to see Angel mentioned, their first two albums are great. But I didn't list them, Led Zep or Chicago because I feel they're a slightly-different category. Whereas many of the examples are bands who are primarily pop/rock and have one or two songs that stray into prog, Angel, LZ and Chicago managed to weave prog elements into many of their songs without tipping the scale over to being labeled prog bands.

Yes, thx, that was the first song that came to my mind.
I'd add a few of my "proto-prog"-faves from the late sixties and early 70s :
UFO: "Flying", Doors: "The End", Rare Bird: "Flight", Golden Earring: "Eight Miles High" and Procol Harum: "In Held Twas In I" (ok, the latter might be "real" prog already ;-) ).
