Sure, but it's still pretty good. "They Brought Sadness" was the greatest thing they ever did, IMHO - with that insane guitar playing of Dave Robinson's. And it's got "Love's Not the Way to Treat a Friend", with the Brautigan lyric - and he was a personal friend of Laurence Hammond (MR leader), I believe?

Greg Dewey, MR drummer, was actually just as great in Country Joe & the Fish; I'm one of those who thinks the C.J. Fish album was their best release after the first two.

Cant argue with that ! The track Leave me/stay is in my book even higher up there.
The countrystuff is not for me and probably reflects their breake up soon after.

Jefferson Airplane's third album. One of their best, and one of the most consistently experimental S.F. psych records.

It's good, but not reaching the excellence of Pillow or Crown IMHO... never thought of it as a SF thing... at least not compared to Blows Against The Empite or Sinfighter... but it's miles ahead o their other albums - Volunteers included

I've actually struggled with this in the past, compared with '...Pillow' and 'Crown...' which strike me as more even and tuneful. Obviously I need to give it another listen.

Won't stop you frm revisitinfg AB@B... But I tend to agree with you, throughh 'struggle' is not a word I'd use for that album.

It contains some of JA's most difficult material for sure, especially stuff like "Rejoyce". Baxter's was very much the first brainchild of the later so proficient Kantner/Slick orientation of the JA spectrum, and I find it quite fascinating how anyone whose career was burgeoning would go straight out on a limp and create something like this. It's a highly uncompromising record for December 1967, that's for sure.

I have a hard time deciding on Pillow, Baxter's or Crown as the best of this "classic" threepiece; they are all so different. The former has the most charm and positive vibes, the middle is their most "progressive" statement while the latter has their most powerful and eerie tracks overall. With Volunteers they are already heading into the 70s (IMO), albeit with some great tunes. And I'm not much of a fan of Bark or Long John Silver.

Overall, Crown gets my nod over ABAB (the more adventurous of the three) and SP (their more commercial), because every song is a gem, and its political message is still somewhat actual... Volunteers is somehow disappointing (only really like three songs from it >> the rest is too harsh/raw)
