Anyone else watching Sharp Objects on HBO? I have absolutely no idea where this thing is going but it's damn entertaining.

We just watched the first episode last night. Looks like it's going to be really interesting.
I already hate Patricia Clarkson's character.

My wife's mother was a piece of work and thus my wife is enjoying hating the shit outa Clarkson's character. She's even worse in the second episode.I already hate Patricia Clarkson's character.
I'm also curious about the stereo system in the house. I might have to check over at the Hoffman forum to see if anyone recognizes the gear.

I need to find The Expanse on my Exodus Kodi add-on as I'm not coughing up $3 a show for it on demand and it doesn't look like Netflix is getting it any time soon.

Yes, quite enjoyed the first two episodes of Sharp Objects so far. Looks like it might unfold in a similar fashion to The Sinner. I like these kinds of mysteries.
And totally agree about Patricia Clarkson's character. Ugh. Great actress of course!

Finished the first season of The Ranch (Netflix) and am about to start on the second. It's about a former high school football star and failed pro who goes home to live with his father & brother to work on the family ranch. It's pretty good w/lots of locker room type humor but it's not strictly a comedy. Stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson (both from That 70s Show) as the brothers, Sam Elliot as the curmudgeonly father, Debra Winger as the mother, and Elisha Cuthbert as Kutcher's high school girlfriend.

I tried watching The Ranch and gave up after 4 or 5 episodes. I found it completely and utterly UN-funny. To each his own...

Well, first of all, it's a half-hour, multi-camera sitcom where character development is rarely a priority. However, this show gradually evolves into more of a dramedy with some serious plots introduced, so there is some character development, at least where Kutcher's character is concerned. Masterson's character is pretty one dimensional but Winger's & Elliot's are more well rounded, so what's to develop?

Granted, I only watched a handful of episodes, but it seemed like the entire premise of the show was this caricaturized dysfunctional family. They sat around the kitchen and put each other down. They sat around at a bar and put each other down. The put-downs weren't that funny or original, nor were they delivered in a truly funny way. Both Kutcher and Masterson were much funnier in That 70s Show, imo. Maybe there is no room for characters to develop in this type of show but you'd hope the writing would improve. You said it has and I'll take you at your word. It just wasn't a show for me.

As sitcoms go, it's definitely not one of the best but it's certainly entertaining enough; for me, anyway. My biggest gripe is the weird laugh track. It doesn't sound fake or real. If that makes sense. Supposedly, it's filmed before a studio audience but I'm not convinced that every laugh you hear from the audience is an authentic reaction.
You picked up on another thing about the show: the delivery. Personally, I think the banter between Kutcher & Masterson is just fine and they've got the chemistry, having worked together before. But sometimes - and it's not just them - the delivery is a little off. Or maybe it's the dialogue; I'm not sure.* The odd thing is, I usually notice it from Debra Winger. I blame that on the director as an actor isn't usually the best judge of their performance.
* I just remembered: the use of the word "fuck". Sometimes it doesn't come off natural. It's as if they swear just because they can.

I think you're talking yourself out of watching this show.

Heh. Nah. There are way more positives to this show than negatives.

I might have stuck it out, but chose not to; even though I have sat through many more episodes of worse shows. The Last Man On Earth instantly comes to mind. I'm halfway through the 3rd season and even though I cannot stand Will Forte, I'm churning my way through to the last episode...for no good reason.

It's funny you bring up LMoE. I don't really like Will Forte, either, but came to love that show. Altho, I started losing interest in the 4th season.
As for The Ranch, I thought of something else that bothers me: all the C&W music. I hate C&W music. For the past two days I've had Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places" stuck in my head. Even my go to "earworm resetter", King Crimson, couldn't dislodge this earworm. I may need a lobotomy.

Great review on last night's Sharp Objects. I have no idea where the fuck this is going but I have a suspicion that the next victim is going to be wearing roller shakes
