Galactic B - you're not alone. I used to laugh at Carpenters music when they were popular. Missed the boat completely there afaic.

Yeah, she was definitely a solid, if not virtuoso drummer, but that voice.......

Still don't know why I didn't REALLY listen during their heyday. Her range was scary good, particularly the low end, and brother Richard, I can hear now but not then, was a superb arranger & producer.

She may have been troubled, insecure and anorexic/bulimic, but she still had one of the best voices in 70s pop, and her voice (contrary to her life choices and ultimately her
"Auschwitz-like" appearance), is still one of the sexiest I've ever heard.

Very left-field imo. So left-field that she flew under the radar for a whole lot of people like me, who now have had epiphanies and realize her worth.

"Left Field Women" actually sounds like a good name for a female group - perhaps something along the lines of TLC.

I feel compelled to mention Nona Hendryx, the creator of, among other things, what must be the world’s only “new age” R&B album in 1989’s Skin Diver (a collaboration with Tangerine Dream’s Peter Baumann, fact fans):

The grandmother of left-field women would be Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn. In the 1830s, she published piano music under her own, hyphenated name, over the strong objections of brother Felix. Either alone at the time would've been outrageous, but combine the two.......

Good choice. I saw her as a backing singer with Talking Heads, and damn she had (still has?) a great voice. Here's something from 1987:

And this from 1983, shortly after her time with Talking Heads:

Hearing Urszula Dudziak's music for the first time--stumbling on a late-night airing of "Darkness and Newborn Light" on some college radio station--was life-changing. Scored a copy of the album and adored it! While searching for the album I discovered her connection to Michal Urbaniak, so I snapped up all those albums too. Then her second album came out, and while there was still some spacey stuff on it, it kicked off with a poppy little ditty that would become a dance craze in the Philippines. Oh well, that's the music biz...

I think this may be more Right-Field stuff, but I discovered this band during the COVID lock-down and I am captivated by the song, the sounds, the video and her haunting voice:

    Anyone else like this?

The band (or project) Keats should have a reunion with her on vocals.

I really love that album, it’s kind of like the mid-point between Talking Heads and Prince. A lot of songs were co-written with the members of the controversial Canadian duo Rough Trade. Speaking of...Carole Pope, talk about left-field!

I was just reminded of of this...um...“song” from controversial performance artist Karen Finley:

Or perhaps you just want to be treated to her vocal stylings alone, minus the music. Karen has you covered:

Shireen is rather busy now by singing BVox with HEILUNG and standing in for Chloe Alper in Pure Reason Revolution at their live gigs this year
