AAJ Review: 1982 Trio + BJ Coole

    1982trio+bjcole.jpg

My review of 1982 Trio + BJ Cole, today at All About Jazz.

This third record for the improvising trio of Nils Økland (Hardanger fiddle, violin), Sigbjørn Apeland (harmonium) and Øyvind Skarbø (drums) expands the folklore-meets-contemporary classical-meets-free improv of its first two discs by adding British BJ Cole, the pedal steel guitarist most have heard, even if they don't know his name, for work with everyone from Brian Eno and David Sylvian to Elton John and Sting. If it changes the trio's complexion, as it should, it also retains the markers that have made this trio so impressive since its early days, performing at the top of Mount Ulriken, in Bergen, Norway, as part of JazzNorway in a Nutshell 2010.

Oh my, this is absolutely remarkable. I got lost in it... Some absolutely beautiful soundscapes.

    You're costing me money again.

Now I'm listening to Gogo Penguin, a new piano group. Pretty impressed so far.
