Are they any good?
^ they're good, but he's pulling your leg. They've changed from their earlier power metal days. Their vocals have a multiple-tracked Queen type of sound.
If you've ever heard Rhapsody. (aka Rhapsody of Fire) they're a bit like them but with the bombast dialed down a few notches. Most people either love or hate the vocalist, Hansi Kursch. I love his vocals. He sang on a couple of Ayreon albums so you might know him from there.
Hopefully the porn-like title won't harm this release!
Just glad to hear new material, it has been a while since At The Edge Of Time was released.
An interesting band, but mostly because of the vocals. Can't remember if their intrumental parts were interesting but the vocals on some albums were really good.
Good news! Their A Night at the Opera is one of my favorite albums, but I haven't been listening to much BG in the past couple of years (getting old, I guess). I did just spin Somewhere Far Beyond the other day, though, and enjoyed it.
To employ a very overused word, these guys were absolutely epic when I saw them on the A Twist in the Myth tour.

Hansi Kursch is a fun front man, IMO. I really enjoyed being at their first ever show in NYC. He was pretty excited.
I think Kursch's voice/singing is fantastic. I went through a Blind Guardian phase a few years ago. My favorite is The Forgotten Tales because I love their covers. I anticipate for that comment. I'm willing to listen to more recent stuff. Used to have 3 or 4 of their album-cover t-shirts.
Laser's Edge now has this in stock (with a glowing review from a source I can't recall). They have the 1CD digibook and are getting the 2CD "Earbook" in soon. The Earbook apparently adds just two bonus tracks, but splits the album across two CDs and tacks a bonus track onto the end of each disk. Hopefully the bonus tracks aren't completely different from the album! A stupid way to do it. I kind of want to hear what the artwork, etc in the Earbook is like before paying the hefty price. I'm guessing most people will be happy with the digibook, which includes one of those bonus tracks.
Hansi Kursch has been planning this album for a long time, and the idea of using choirs and orchestras had me a little worried that he was missing the plot, but the few tracks from this I've heard sound great. His strong voice enables this to rise above the typical symphonic metal. It seems to pretty much kick ass, really.
Excellent band, who in their early days had a tendency to release album after album after album of the same type of stuff, which in itself was fine because that's what the fans (myself included) wanted...BUT...devleopment and the odd change was sorely needed.
Gets a good review from the Financial Times!

So the new CD is a good place to start with them?

I haven't heard the new one yet but their best, IMHO (and the one most likely to appeal to a prog fan), is A Night at the Opera. One of my favorite albums.
My favorite is Imaginations from the Other Side. But the new one is very good.
