Red Jasper - The Great and Secret Show

Colour me surprised... I didn't expect to see a new Red Jasper album suddenly appear, but it seems they are back, some eighteen years after their last album! I don't see them mentioned much anymore - possibly they were in the 'forgotten 90s' thread but I don't remember now... I always kind of liked their sound, a folkish slant to a neo-ish approach that seemed to work well. I see Kinesis has this new one available. I'm intrigued!

I only have one of their albums, because a shop I frequent, selling stuff that recordcompany's have deleted, sometimes seems to have a batch of CD's on the SI label, and I tend to buy anything on that label, I don't own, for some reason (I worked for the magazine). Bought quite some stuff this way:
Aragon - The meeting (Mouse act V)
Aragon - Rocking horse and other short stories from the past
Blyndsyde - Into the storm of the eye
    Brassé - Pawn
    Casino - Casino
Citizen Cain - Serpents in camouflage
    Differences - The voyage
Differences - A world of difference
Egdon Heath - Him, the snake and I
Peter Gee - Heart of David
Tracy Hitchings - From ignorance to ecstasy
    Landmarq - Infinity parade
    Mercy Train - Presence
    Red Jasper - A midsummer night's dream
Strangers On A Train - The key part II: The labyrinth
    Timelock - Louise Brooks
    Wings Of Steel - Homesick
    Ywis - Ywis
Various Artists - Progressive & Melodic rock vol. 1 - The SI Music sampler

Cool, thanks for that. Big RJ fan here. I knew Dave Clifford, the drummer, had been working on Clive Nolan's theater projects , and he may have mentioned plans for this, but I didn't know it was anywhere near done.

My fave RJ album is The Winter's Tale.

Not familiar with a lot of Red Jasper, but I do have "Winters Tale" and agree it is a great one. I may have to check the new one out.

According to RYM, this is coming out on Angel Air. A tad odd, imo. Anyway, autobuy.

Renate, you don't have a copy of Aragon's Mouse? You even interviewed them about it!
They're back in the studio recording

Anyway, Red Jasper are cool. I have their albums on SI/ Cymbeline and also have Sting in the Tail which is even older.
The new one is without Davy Dodds and frankly I'm not really interested. On Anagramary Dodds was already pushed to the background a bit and to be honest I missed him.
Cool they are still around though, since they've been away too long!

"Very, very nice," said a man in the crowd,
    When the golden voice appeared.
She was gold alright, but then so is rust.
"Such a shame about the beard."

Yeah, I looked at the Kinesis site, and they said that both Dodds and the Folky elements are gone. I'll no doubt get it, but I expect it to be the worst since the EP and first 2 albums.

Just FYI, Dodds wasn't interested in spending as much time on Anagrammary as he was before - he wasn't pushed to the back.

Of course I have Mouse. I just listed the CD's on SI Music I bought recently for cheap, not the ones I already owned. I still remenber the interview. Quite expensive, if I have to say so.

    $17.99 from Kinesis (plus postage).

Maybe - I'm not familiar with that label so it's hard for me to says. Can anyone name other artists on the label?

Sorry, I wasn't talking about the expenses for a CD, but the costs for the interview with Aragon. Phone-costs to call Australia weren't low at that time.

You can order the CD direct from the band for the same price, it might be slightly less. Plus, for an extra 5 pounds you can get something from their back catalog. I'm not crazy about anything other than the 2CD set of A Midsummer Night's Dream/The Winter's Tale, so I'd recommend that highly.

I had never heard of Red Jasper, but now I have discovered their new album and I like it a lot. The cd is available at Amazon for about $10 plus shipping, or the mp3 album is only $6.23.

I've been enjoying it too. There are a few bits that sound like older Red Jasper, but for the most part it sounds like a long lost neo-prog album from the early '90's. A good one!

I saw them play it live about 2 weeks ago at a little pub just outside Swindon. They are unlikely to do many live shows as David Clifford is a busy man. He has "retired" from Clive Nolan's musicals and he is now part of Blue Brothers show, which he says is very successful. David also gave me the most useless piece of advise I've ever had which is to never both direct and play a leading role in the same musical. Since I have no talent for either...

The previous singer was also at the show and David grabbed him onto stage to do one of the old numbers. It really was a fun evening.

    Yes - a good album.

^ Very cool. Do you remember what the old number was that they did?

At least two. There was one that DC called "The Speedy-Uppy Song".

This was the first time they did the song. When they played their last one, the crowd cheered for more... Clive Nolan persuaded them to do it again as an encore. I know it was an old song as Clive said they played it when they were on tour together.

I'm actually not that familiar with the band's first two albums. Looks like it was a fun night though!

I would like to have this. with the line up of musicians on it, I would think it was a pretty good one. Am I right?

thank you. I love Tracy. she's a real trooper. glad she overcame her personal struggles. the SI release seems quite high wherever I find it but the re-issue can be bought for around 12 bucks. decisions, decisions.....

    I got it fairly cheap, I think € 2,99.
