Just picked up Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony. This one comes in Blu-Ray Audio and Video. I just love watching the orchestra play. It would really be something if I had any musical talent.

I've had this for years. In addition to a masterful performance of the symphony, it tells the interesting story behind it.

Love Bax's music. I've been playing his Symphonies lately. Love the Winter Legends.

It has pretty much been Bax, and Martinu symphonies I'm listening to lately. And Sibelius orchestral music.

Bax is one of my all-time favorites. Track down his Symphony in F on Vocalion - love how they reconstructed that! --Peter

Picked it up. Couldn’t resist it when I saw it available. Bax has many tone poems that were great. I was listening to tintigel today

You guys can write this down right now.....this piece of music may be the greatest for my own ears and heart - possibly my favorite 8+ minutes of music, period. The sound world that Sibelius creates with strings and winds is just beyond genius. I have never been to Finland but this piece takes me some remote lake in the middle of deep, deep bumfuck Finland off of some super rural dirt road, deep in the pine forest. Then a clearing up ahead, and this lake is there - surrounded by the pines , it's totally overcast, dusk, and the weather is a cool - autumn. Yeah, yeah then I guess a swan appears and who knows whatever the fuck happens....haha! OK, but you get my drift. Sibelius is so full of nature in his music, and it's really Finland, the far north Nordic world, and his surroundings that I hear so vividly. His dark soul is embedded in these pieces too. Such a genius. This recording with Vanska/Lahti is my favorite (from the Sibelius Edition sets) but they have some weird compilation version here or something. Anyway, LOVE this tune so very much. I take music like this to my grave with me.

PS - the real story about this piece is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Swan_of_Tuonela
but to my ears it will always have my own imagination.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

I'm either going to blow the 50 bucks and get the Essential Sibelius 15 CD on BIS, or just get the 3 disc tone poems set by Jarvi. I don't have Lemminkainen, En Saga, and several other pieces. I just have the symphonies, a few tone poems, and the Incidental Music box by Segerstam on Naxos which is a great set.

Stop there and do it. It's the best thing ever. The dynamics are extreme, just an FYI, so stuff the like intro to S3 is almost inaudible, but it's also why these recordings are so well engineered.

I quite agree Chalkpie, that is a great piece of music Sibelius is beyond genius and into the realm of the numinous and profound. for me the emotional content of some of his works is so intense I have to be in the right mood to even listen to it. Thanks for the tip on the "Essential Sibelius" 15 CD set StartThrower. That looks like a winner and a relatively cheap way to flesh out my collection.

Yeah, I heard some complaints about the dynamics. But for anyone who wants the Vanska symphony set it's a no-brainer to go with the more comprehensive set, so you get 12 more CDs for an extra 15 bucks. And I sampled the whole thing and it sounds beautiful. I just got a nice symphony set by Alexander Gibson on Chandos. Bought the 3 CDs for a dollar and change each.

Definitely get something with the tone poems. Them thangs is awesome.

Methinks it might be time to dip my crusty misshapen toe into the music of Sibelius(i have none).
