I was listening to Bartók’s Sonata for Unaccompanied Violin yesterday and let me tell you, that thing is nuts! I had the video with the score so I could follow along. So many double/triple/quadruple stops!

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
Just ran across this...have you heard the Robin Ticciati version? My god...the sound on that thing...and the energy!!!
Speaking of this Ticciati, I've run across a lot of really well recorded and excellently played things by him with various orchestras. The Brahms symphonies and Debussy's "La Mer" and "Nocturnes" specifically along with the Ravel you mentioned.

I'm currently listening to a Jonathan Harvey CD on the NMC label. This is the first piece.
Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas battling brain cancer.

Anyone here have an interest in reel-to-reel recordings of 20th Century Classical composers (mostly English and Eastern European/Scandinavian)? This is part of a larger collection (I grabbed the CD's already) from a collector in NY who has passed away. I am not sure how many of these recordings are off-air broadcasts or transfers of vinyl, but judging from the CD's, there's a high probability of a treasure trove of rarities if names like Bax, Svendsen, Alfven, Bantock, Stenhammar, Halvorsen, Rubbra, etc mean anything to you. There are also several hundred audio cassette tapes. To get a better idea of this guys' tastes (as well as mine, in this instance), you can browse the first few pages of my Discogs offerings:

Playing Jianer Zhu Symphony no. 1 now. There is much that rocks in this first movement, titled "!".

Sebastian Fagerlund-A couple of his pieces...Isola and Drifts for Orchestra and Stonework for Orchestra.
Really good stuff, I can hear a band like Anglagard playing an electro version of this type of music. The recordings are stunning as well!

Just read a review about this Estonian composer Tālivaldis Ķeniņš symphonies 5 and 8
https://5against4.com/2022/05/19/tal...onies-nos-5-8/
Anyone familiar with him? The review is very compelling (so he's doing his job). The short samples sound great too, and the label Ondine is one of my "go to's" for great sound.

ps. Listened to this last night...wonderful and plays into my recent Paul Dolden infatuation with his extensive use of micro-tonalities (to my un-learned ears)

Frederick Converse - The Mystic Trumpeter (Faletta/Buffalo)

And now playing Converse's Flivver Ten Million

I discovered this thanks to a newspaperreview, mentioning progrock.
This is not the same performance as in the video, but I suppose it's the same concert. This is followed by three contrasting movements from Benjamin Yusupov's Viola Concerto. After a melancholy passage with bandoneon, acoustic guitar and flute, a stirring tango is heard. The adrenaline level reaches a peak when Philippens lets loose on the electric violin in a screeching prog rock fantasy.
Lately I have been getting a kick out of this Concerto for two pianos by the Dutch composer Roukens
Part 1
https://youtu.be/6YHhHCv0qyU
Part 2
https://youtu.be/EHVI4_FDfbs
Part 3
https://youtu.be/PlEZ2pR9RUw
Its eclectic, rhytmic and very energetic. Completely awesome.
Its on the Cd 'Dutch masters' by Lucas and Arthur Jussen. A very good cd with mostly obscure work by 20th century Dutch composers. The exception is the above Concerto which is a new piece. Check it out. You can probably find it on the streaming services.
thx for the headup, it looks like Qobuz has it:
