Some years ago, Dave Attell had a series on Comedy Central in which he performed standup in various cities across the US. While in each city, he visited all the late night hot spots. In the New Orleans episode, he visited a sewage treatment plant. The workers there referred to used condoms as rainbow trout.

My Dad and Mom have decided to move to a senior center next summer. Good for them.

My father recently wrote a 30+ page semi-fictional piece imagining, starting with his great-grandfather leaving the slums of Manchester, UK, how his parents met. Pretty good, actually.

    It isn't.

And we all do. The graveyard of gadgets is, as I read somebody else describe it, a kind of "fossil record of technology." Old phones, old remotes, old recorders, old stereo equipment, old computers, old software.

    My Mom's culling the herd-

    Mom: "Do you want this?"
    Me: "No."

    (Next time I'm over)-

Mom: "This box of stuff is for you."

Not her. She'll donate it to religious non-profits, but not Goodwill, because they sell it instead of giving it away.

The Goodwills around here let you stealth drop off too. It would be way too convenient, so we can't do that.

I have two boxes of chipped dimestore glassware that Ma ordered me to take! The minute I toss it, her Ma ESP will cause her to ask to see her 60’a cheap-assed punch bowl! Those boxes will make it to the dumpster before the Funeral Home receives her remains some day!

I have a Goodwill room of stuff I buy there. Everything is priced by the pound except shoes, they are $3 a pair.

My uncle worked in then owned a TV repair shop most of his working life. When he retired, he ended up with a garage full of old TVs of no use to anyone. The state of California only allows the disposal of a few TVs a year. So he's still working on getting rid of them, about 2 decades after he retired. Meanwhile, the cost of disposing of CRT TVs is going up each year.

A pet peeve of mine is people dumping their useless junk on charities, like Goodwill. Not only is one not actually giving them anything, one is stealing from them what one would otherwise have to pay to have the junk properly disposed of. A non-profit I used to work for had to shut down their thrift store for this very reason. It turned into a money losing proposition.

There is a local guy here that is asking people to help fill a shipping container with stuff to send to Zambia.
Chances are good that Zambians really don't need the stuff, and it messes with their economy to dump "free stuff from America".
Perhaps he started out with a house clearing project.

To say nothing of the fact that it's probably racist.

I'm not sure about Zambia specifically, but many third world nations leapfrogged the west in wireless communications because they had no outdated infrastructure to overcome, and they actually have faster speeds and better infrastructure than we do.

I think Garyhead's mother and my mother were separated at birth....

Mom had one of those things you dip your fingers in to make them younger, or whatever it's supposed to do. Sat in the cabinet above the tub for maybe thirty years unused. So I tossed it.

A couple of months later she pulls the step stool in there searching for it. Asks me where it's at. I claim ignorance.

How she even remembered it was in there baffled me. It had been hidden for years under some blankets when I tossed it.

Most financial transactions in sub-Saharan Africa are done by cell phone, even by those who can only afford old flip-phones. Most there don't have access to banks, let alone credit or debit cards.

My mother, Doris, passed away this evening at home with my family. The dementia shut down her body and she was unable to do anything. She was 92 and had a good life. Her last six years she was living with us. I will dearly miss her but know she is at peace.

Sorry to hear this. Very honorable that you cared for her around the clock. May she rest in peace.

My sympathies, Ed. Knowing that it's best for her and that a full life was lived doesn't always make it easier. Cherish your memories.
