Thread: Music for Winter?

    Music for Winter?

Winter has arrived in the US Midwest quite suddenly, leaving me with little music ready to listen to in my walks outdoors. Unlike many, I actually quite enjoy winter, but much winter-oriented music is quite dreary and isolating, such as Travis & Fripp's Thread (2008). Marconi Union's Different Colours (2012) does hit at a nice middle ground.

But, does anyone have suggestions that capture winter more positively?

I think the opening track from Vangelis' Antarctica score fits this role quite nicely.

    Also, U2's New Year's Day.

    Anyone have other ideas?

    I adore that one!

Here's another; one of the finest tunes Alan Hull wrote for Lindisfarne:
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

I know you asked for songs that portray winter more "positively" and the two i've posted aren't..exactly...positive....i apologize.

I'm a sucker for George Winston's December album.. I realize it's still November.. but once we turn the page for Dec. 1.. Windam Hill albums get regular play throughout the winter months..

"Henry Cow always wanted to push itself, so sometimes we would write music that we couldn't actually play – I found that very encouraging." - Lindsay Cooper, 1998
"I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip." - Roger Waters, 2014

    Ammer/Einheit/et al, Frost 79° 40'

It's basically a musical interpretation of Antarctic explorers freezing to death, so yeah, don't listen to it while having S.A.D.

    Also, "Eskimo" by the Residents?

Not prog but Sarah McLachlan's Song for a Winter's Night is great on a snowy night. Very beautiful, mellow song.

Perhaps more akin to theatrical metal, but this is one of my favorite winter themed albums:

Kate hit it out of the park with this one, as far as winter albums. This album, a fire in the fireplace, and a really good single malt is sort of a yearly tradition for me now.

Forget the picture of late autumn - this piece has snowy winter goodness written all over it (at least in my mind). Phenomenal piece of music regardless of what it evokes in the listener's mind.
