I heard Larry play the Ravel piece in a bar a few weeks ago, so I decided to pick up the CD.
The whole record is beautiful!
Stupid story, I confess, but...
Larry actually pissed me off a couple of days ago. I was listening to Chicago's only jazz radio station, WDCB in my car and they played a live track of him playing "Bumpin' on Sunset," my least favorite Wes Montgomery tune. It drones on in A minor for almost 3 minutes, but it's one redeeming feature is that when it gets to the bridge (with some chord changes), it's very cathartic, maybe because you've waited that long for it. So Larry played the tune and blew a minimalist sort of solo that rambled on for a while and then ended it... without ever playing the bridge! I was yelling at my car radio, "REALLY, LARRY?! YOU SKIPPED THE BRIDGE?!"
I know; I take my music way too seriously. But what a waste of time that was! Sorry, Larry, you've done some great stuff, but that wasn't amongst it.

Heh, heh! I didn't like the original all that much. There's a YouTube video of Bill Frisell playing this tune. Bill and his group have a wonderful sound, but the music makes me a bit sleepy. Things pick up on the second half when they go into the other tune.
Here's one I really like from the Bolero CD. Written by the second guitarist Brian Keane, who is now a successful composer for television.
