What theme links these five songs?

    1. The Band - Up On Cripple Creek
    2. Nilsson - Everybody's Talkin'
    3. Genesis - Watcher of the Skies
    4. David Bowie - China Girl
    5. Fleetwood Mac - Seven Wonders

OK, they all feature human voices... they were all recorded before 1988... but I want something a bit more specific than that.

If you can solve it, supply one of your own.

2 of the songs I've never heard. 3 of them I haven't heard in many years. So, I am officially stumped.

They each feature two parties with a disconnect. A difficulty communicating.
One party is isolated in some way.

No one has guessed the link yet. It may well be true that they have all been used in movies but that's not the answer.

So why don't you just tell us already, since apparently nobody knows the frelling answer?!

I suppose because I thought some people might find it fun? Members come from various time zones, it seems fair to give it 24 hours before giving the answer.

Hint: it's not so much the songs themselves, as their various contexts.

    Loss of...something.

Into my heart an air that kills
    From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
    I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
    And cannot come again.

Nope, nothing to do with loss. What poet are you quoting?

I expected better from you people.

The songs appear on the following albums:

    The Last Waltz
    Aerial Ballet
    Foxtrot
    Let's Dance
    Tango In the Night

    Has the penny dropped yet?

All the albums reference various dance steps.

    What do I win?

So the songs chosen had no relevance aside from the albums they appear on. A bit of a wild goose chase...

Nothing, because when you see the titles all written down it's instantly obvious to anyone. Congratulations, you've done something anyone who can read could do!

Well, you're still kind of new here. Give it a little more time; you'll lose any expectations of us that you once had.

OK, Scott Balls can be said to have "got it". In a manner of speaking. You win one kudo.

And, to certain people who seem to have nothing nice to say in what was supposed to be a fun thread... thanks for nothing. If people have no interest in a thread, I don't know why they can't just stay out of it instead of spoiling it.

Wait, do you mean me? Read the thread title: "What theme links these five songs?"

Up On Cripple Creek is from The Band's second album, by the way - they just happen to do it live on The Last Waltz, so...
