Forgotten Pop Gems of the 1980s | 2.0

given that we’re all of similar age and mindset, it is probably a good idea to revive this thread from the old PE site – i really enjoyed everyone’s input and suggestions – given that i do have a strong bias to quirky pop from said decade (something, which many prog minded artists seemed to excel at)

here's one i have just (re)discovered, which has THAT certain something .... great song:

The prog act she actually had links with (if you consider them prog) was the Moody Blues. Pip Williams was producing both of them at the time and even got Patrick Moraz to play a synth solo on one of the tracks from the Perfect Timing album. Her keyboardist (and frequent songwriting collaborator) Bias Boshell went on to replace Patrick in the Moodies (and IIRC, still plays with them today). He, of course, had been in Trees (the English folk-rock act) prior to joining the Kiki Dee Band.

This is a beautiful song from an unjustly neglected band:

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

I could post their biggest hit, “(Feels Like) Heaven,” but I’m currently jonesin’ for the minor follow-up hit:

After the break-up of City Boy, Lol Mason formed this band, the Maisonettes. They had one hit and regrettably disappeared afterwards:

What about Into the Night by Benny Mardones? I love that song. I first heard it on 95.5 KLOS(my local rock station).

The thing with 80s, to me, is that despite the often 'cold' production values there were many of the pop hits that simply had gorgeous melodies. To me that sense of melody got kinda lost in the 90, mainly due to the dance craze. And despite there being exceptions, that melodic sense has never really returned to pop music.
And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.

I agree. Rap, of course, is melody free and indie bands were pretty devoid of memorable melodies. Oasis (maybe not indie) being one exception. Problem is they stole their melodies from the Beatles. The Darkness is one band which brought back classic rock melodies. If it wasn't for the horrible production of those CDs (compressed) I would listen to them more.

I think you also have to remember that a lot of musicians working in the '80s had learned their craft and paid their dues in the '70s which is why they were well versed in melody.

The 80s produced some fine Pop tunes.

perhaps better known from the IBdiB DVD?:

    Anyway, I like it

Roine Stolt did some nice Poppy things in the 80s and so did Stefan Fredin.

"Very, very nice," said a man in the crowd,
    When the golden voice appeared.
She was gold alright, but then so is rust.
"Such a shame about the beard."

I don't know if this qualifies as forgotten or not, but I always loved this song and I haven't heard it in years.

What about Don't Pay The Ferryman By Chris De Burgh? I heard that song on KLOS on St. Patrick's Day(and on YouTube many times before). It surely qualifies, doesn't it?
