Thread: Top Concerts of 2014

Mr Sly, no need to sheepish about R.E.O. Speedwagon. They're awesome!

Anyway, my top ten of a very busy, largely excellent concert year:

    1. Trans Siberia Orchestra (24/10 Manchester). One of the best gigs I've ever attended, let alone this year. Cheesy for sure but pure vintage cheddar!

    2. Shonen Knife (1/5 Leeds). Female Japanese punk/power pop trio. A riot.

    3. 10CC (26/10 Bradford). Veterans on top of their game. A great night. Kudos to Red Sky July for a sparkling country pop support.

    4. Asia (12/6 Holmfirth). More phenomenal veterans, with a great new guitarist. Vim, vigour & a fine mix of old & new, song-wise.

    5. A Roomful of Mirrors (20/6 Ambleside). An acoustic blend of psychedelic pop & English/Eastern Euopean folk. Just stumbled across them playing in a pub & they were mind-blowing.

    6. Seventh Sin (14/2 Wakefield). Dutch female-fronted symphonic rock, supporting the evergreen Edenbridge but even better on the night.

    7. Molly Hatchet (7/2 Wakefield). Marvellous southern rock, metalled up to the nth degree. Phil McCormack is the best front-man I've seen in years.

    8. Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger. (3/9 Leeds) Lennon fils & chums. Swirling psych guitars & keys. Strong songs & a surfeit of hair. Brilliant!

    9. Jefferson Starship (24/1 Clitheroe). Went along not expecting too much but they were fab. David Freiberg was in fine voice & Cathy Richardson sensibly did her own thing rather than ape the blessed Grace. A very pleasant surprise.

    10. The Heathen Kings. (10/10 Leeds). The new Steeleye Span? A tiny backroom concert & a stirring pot pourri of mandolins, guitars & lovely male/female vocals. If this were 1972, they'd be stars.

There you go. Not overly-festooned with prog, I suppose but great memories one & all.

The Primus show from 4 nights ago is top of my list right now, followed by

    The Monkees
Steely Dan at the Il State Fair
Ringo (not the best all star lineup but always great to see a Beatle)
    Necromonkey @ Progday
    Kotebel @ Progday
    Thumbscrew
    Richard & Teddy Thompson
    Shonen Knife
    Man Or Astroman?
    Temples
    Roky Erikson w/The Black Angels
    Keneally, Bendian & Lunn
    Cheer Accident w/Yowie
    Ian Anderson

will be seeing Adrian Belew , The New Pornographers & The Mavericks in the next couple weeks so I'm sure they will make the list too.

Now I can add Atomic Ape opening for Secret Chiefs 3. Atomic Ape are outrageously good, clearly the brainchild of Jason Schimmel (Estradasphere). The stars of this show, however, are the Parrish twins horn section, phenomenal.

I've seen SC3 numerous times over the years and this is my favorite set of theirs. The tunes are heavier in general and there is more keys than usual. They have also added a sprinkling of EDM - it's cool to see the band bopping "rave" style!
Duncan's going to make a Horns Emoticon!!!

Three Friends in Paris Oct 24. Far and away the best thing this year for me.

Gord Downie and the Sadies- Vancouver. It just full out rocked.

Maria Muldaur- White Rock. All about the songs.

Coming up is Steve Hackett in Vancouver in December.
Others from 2014, Nick Cave, Medeski Schofield Martin and Wood, Russell deCarle, Dream Theatre, Don Alder, David Gogo, Bright Lights Social Hour.

I pick Three Friends as my top theoretical concert of the year, having not seen them.

Actually, I think my favorite show was The Zombies on the Moodies Cruise. Those guys bring it. Colin Blunstone even sang Old and Wise from Eye in the Sky and killed it. The Strawbs did a damn good electric performance of Hero and Heroine as well, much cooler than I expected it to be.

I fell asleep during the second song but I was really tired and was starting with a cold and scratchy throat. I split after the third song cause I planned on working all day Sunday. I should have told you to pick the Jets like I did.

Poor Billy slept through a few songs from each band! I managed to last through Discipline's set and I'm glad I did; they closed with "Canto IV" and did "When the Walls are Down" for an encore - two of my favorites!

I haven't seen much, but the Crimso show (Sat - 3rd night in NYC) was not unspectacular.

    I don't wish I wasn't there (but I couldn't make it anyway).

Indeed. I saw the Zombies in my hometown last summer and that was a Wow moment for me. Never thought I'd get to hear that one live.

I haven't seen that many shows, but proggish-wise, mine are:

    1 - Hiromi @ The Howard
2 - Crack the Sky @ Rams Head East or whatever it's called (Annapolis)
    3 - King Crimson @ Kimmel Center

I really need to get out more.
