Thread: Prog "sacred cows" you feel are overrated

  1. #26
a fair few of the Avant bands and the more dissonant, modern classical, free-jazz influenced stuff.

It's not the music per se, as i like a lot of bands that fall into those categories, but i do feel a rather ugly, patronising "prog-hipster" sort of attitude has sprung up around them on the web over the years.

^Yeah, that sneering '*so* much better than all that symphonic stuff' attitude isn't exactly endearing. I've nothing against the bands themselves. I can't see the need for the divide within the fanbase...and this can go both ways.

The problem isn't so much liking Present or Thinking Plague or the Knells. It's why someone might like them. And conversely, why they might not have all that much interest in, say, Neal Morse or the Flower Kings. Essentially, it comes down to the old Big-P versus little-p divide: Do you love this music because it has a certain well-established sound? Or do you love it because it has a spirit of adventure and discovery?

The problem, though, is this: If you love this music because it has a spirit of adventure and discovery, then simply by doing so, you're sending a message to those who love it because it has a certain well-established sound. By preferring "difficult" music that takes a bit of time to absorb and a bit of work to develop an ear for at all, you're implying that you're better than them, that they have no taste, that they might as well be listening to "Honky-Tonk Women" and all the other worn-to-death chestnuts on Classic Rock Radio, and that the music they enjoy so much is just tired rehashings and not "progressive" at all. Even if you don't mean that, would never say it, and don't in fact feel any condescension at all. What you said or what you meant doesn't matter. It's how it's received that counts.

Baribrotzer, I also see some 'symph' fans who are stuck in their ways, know what they like (so to speak) and never stop reminding everybody of that fact- this is no better.

But I don't like to see Genesis or Yes fans being sneered at, because some of us fans of those bands (a lot of us, probably) are into different types of the music.

As always, generalizations are a bad idea, as my list crosses several genres

Got reminded of many more after posting my .02

    It is cathartic

Polite posters who chose not to shit in threads about bands they don't "get" need an outlet to do so without being an ass

Where can I find this ratings system? (oh, you mean...in my own mind?) ...never mind.

    Cathartic?

The need to display public disrespect for musicians who have given every ounce of their heart, blood, and sweat for nearly their entire lives so folks can anonymously hide behind their keyboards and shit on them? I'm all for fucking around and joking, but its threads like this that really dumbs down this place to a second grade mentality.

All the stuff you like is overrated.

  22. #47
IMO music is too subjective to assign over/underrated values. I personally think echolyn is overrated, because they're a band that I really like but some folks here think are the greatest thing ever. Conversely, bands like Miriodor or Gosta Berlings Saga I feel are underrated because I think they should appeal to everyone. It all comes down to opinion. <shrug>

    Tres dramatic, no?

Just a list of bands that most love but we don't seem to be able to appreciate

Not sure I've seen anything "disrespectful" here, just simple lists
