Thread: Which bands are you an advocate for?

  1. #51
Cirrus Bay, because I think there is more to them than they are given credit for.
Sanguine Hum, because I think they should be more well known.
Big Big Train, for such great production and mood.
Ciccada, because I recently heard of them, and they still sound fresh. Perhaps that will wear off, but for now they are sounding great.

I think the 2nd and 3rd Singularity CDs are brilliant and everyone should listen to. Also The Mandrake Project kills me. I'm so sad they are no more.

An advocate here on the forum... or to the general public? I look through my meager CD collection and realize that the only bands the general public would recognize are CCR, Yes, Tull and Rush.... and even some of the people I know are unaware of Yes, Tull and Rush. So I'm an advocate for any of my favorite prog, prog-metal or stoner bands to anyone who's willing to listen.

Perhaps the most frustrating thing is knowing someone who SHOULD be into our "unknown" bands, but isn't. A guy who works nights at my workplace used to be a drummer, was a big prog fan in the 70's. He often references bits from Tales from Topographic Oceans and often plays his ELP Pictures at an Exhibition CD. He has no idea of any prog beyond the 70's. I tried introducing him to some of our modern bands from the 90's and onward, and he was unmoved! When that was me circa 1999, discovering the Flower Kings, Spocks Beard, Echolyn, Iluvatar, Rocket Scientists, and a gazillion other bands playing the music I had been missing since the 70's, I was ECSTATIC!!!
You say Mega Ultra Deluxe Special Limited Edition Extended Autographed 5-LP, 3-CD, 4-DVD, 2-BlueRay, 4-Cassette, five 8-Track, MP4 Download plus Demos, Outtakes, Booklet, T-Shirt and Guitar Pick Gold-Leafed Box Set Version like it's a bad thing...

Among "second tier" 70's bands with prog leanings, I'm a big advocate of Be Bop Deluxe, Angel and Horslips.

I have the first Singularity and its not bad. I didn't realize they'd recorded any more. So there is improvement on the 2nd album then?

Yeah Ernie, I've told many people about Bad Dog U and several others on here like Eccentric Orbit, but as with much of this music that we care for it's so obscure that people just shrug it off and say "that's pretty good" or something to that affect and then it never enters their mind afterwards.

If my radio show counts as a place to promote/advocate bands:

From the 70s - Nektar, Be-Bop Deluxe, Gentle Giant, 10cc, stuff like that.
Newer: It Bites, Marillion, Tinyfish, Kino, RPWL, many more!

Newer stuff outside the prog realm:

The Running Jumps - wonderful mix of power-pop and prog !

Jonatha Brooke - fantastically creative songwriter, hard to just pinpoint as a typical 'Singer/songwriter'

Elbow - they have the anthemic thing down pat. Love their lyrics too.

    Calexico

    Crowded House

And of course... always ... Sandy Denny

There are very few bands I try to turn people onto anymore. But anyone willing to listen, I'll try to turn them on to Echolyn and most recently, District 97.

Iron Maiden and Metallica. I can't stop gushing about them to people.

For prog it's Gentle Giant. The pearl in the ocean of prog. Loved this band instantly.

I do this with a lot of bands really. But one that comes to mind is Steve Unruh and Resistor. I'm often trying to spread the word as much as I can without boring people in the process. I think he's fantastic on his own and Resistor is a great little band too.

But honestly, what's worth to advocate such a group like this.

Zip Tang (Chicago band who should be heard by many more people - outstanding)

All of these bands contain friends of mine, some, very close friends.

    I always advocate for friends.
