Thread: Beatles songs by prog bands

  1. #51

This is a great one. A very unusual choice of a song (don't remember any other covers of this particular one), and it is truly reimagined - in a most peculiar way, as a heavy bluesy tune contrary to the melodic baroque-tinged original. I recently revisited the only album these guys did ("Dirt Box" from 1972) and it's better than I remembered, with almost a proto-stoner vibe to the proceedings.

The obscure German band Tau did an interesting German-language version of "L.S.D." (which is how they titled their version)

Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

Flagrante Delicto, a band with Pål Søvik, played The Fool On The Hill, which is featured on the compilation-album "The Good, The Bad and The Orange" (Briskeby Records, 1997)

Interesting choice, I think I have this album, but I totally forgot about For No One, one of my favorite Beatles songs.

Yes, and I have this album too. It's pretty good, aside of boring Beatles cover)

Yes, She's a Woman track is from Blow By Blow album, and the live version is brilliant.

I just got off the phone with Phil, and he agrees with you : "Just crazy talk!"

But in my heart, his version will always be the true one.

    Definitely, one of Paul's Best.

Since we have seemingly devolved from prog bands playing Beatles, here are some other non-prog bands.

Headeast did an amazing live version of Its For You (a Lennon/McCartney song but one that I don't think the Beatles ever recorded).

Tori Amos did a cover of Happiness is a Warm Gun.

    Sarah McLachlan covered Blackbird.

The Carpenters, aside from Ticket to Ride and Help have also covered Nowhere Man.

George Benson, Richie Havens and Joe Cocker have all done several Beatles songs.

The Grateful Dead played a number of Beatles songs live but I don't think recorded any on studio albums (you can find some on various live recordings like the Dick's Picks series).

Jerry Garcia did record studio versions of "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Dear Prudence."

I love Wigwam's laid-back version of "Let It Be" from their '74 live album "Live Music from the Twilight Zone". I also have a version by Kate Bush that is quite nice.

Any love (or did I miss it?) for Transatlantic's slab of Abbey Road (She's So Heavy) on their Live in America set?
