Thread: WTF covers

  1. #151
This is interesting, but it's four hours long and should be taken in doses.

On his "Ridiculously Self-Indulgent Ill-Advised Tour" last year, Weird Al Yankovic played a different cover song every night as part of his encore. Whether you like Weird Al or not, sample some of this stuff, not because any given cover is brilliant, but because as a whole it shows how amazingly versatile his band is.

Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

"In the Air Tonight" by Lil' Kim. I don't know if this is considered a true cover or not since Phil Collins is sampled extensively in the song.

Apparently it was on "Urban Renewal," "a tribute album to singer Phil Collins, released in 2001 in most European markets and in 2003 in the United States, containing remakes of his songs by R&B, soul and hip hop performers." (from Wiki)

This is how I think a rap cover can be done really well:

While I was looking for that, I found this piece of political satire:

Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.

It is also included on the 4-CD set Phil Collins' Plays Well With Others.

Right. That's where I heard it. It's an interesting collection. I like the first 2 CDs the best.

Lewis Baloue (a.k.a. Randall A. Wulff or Lewis or Randy Duke) adapted "Strangers In The Night" in a very special way on his album "Romantic Times" (from 1985) and called it "We Danced All Night":

This is terrible. She should pay Golden Earring not just copyrights, but also a compensation for what she did to that song.

She played actual gigs? I thought she just played for quarters outside the Castro MUNI station.

I think I heard Sandy Denny's cover of Elton John's Candle In The Wind before I heard the original.

Although Denny left the folk-rock on Rendezvous I really love her voice on these songs.

^^^^ Sweet Jeebus, that drew a tear, especially knowing that Sandy Denny died younger than Marilyn...

Cover from Mike Oldfield - To France

Prog connection, the violinplayer Pete Sage played with Wally.

The Buena Vista High Symphonic and Show Band from Sierra Vista, AZ attempt themes from Rick Wakeman’s The Six Wives of Henry VIII, with a Crumar synthesizer and the usual woozy junior orchestra. Results are about what you would expect.

I love covers. Bullcrap about stealing other people's creativity. If that's all an artist did was cover, ok, maybe I'd get it. But if an artist has done all their own work, but decide once in a blue moon to do a cover... I dig it. Here's the best one ever. Italy's Universal Totem Orchestra, covering Hawkwind. It's fuckin brilliant. Quit early on this at your own loss.

Another cover on the Rendezvou-album (which contains mostly Denny's own songs) is Richard Thompson's I Wish I Was A Fool For You:
(I think it Steve Winwood on organ)

Not sure if this qualifies as a WTF cover, it kind of does at about the 6:06 mark. You've been warned.

Eric: "What the hell Hutch, it's all Rush, what if we wanted a little variety?"

Hutch: "Rush is variety, Bitch! Rule number one: in my van, its Rush! All Rush, all the time...no exceptions."

    From "Fanboys" 2009.
