Birdy mentioned Gnu High upthread. What a monster cd.Keith Jarrett, who almost never does a sideman gig, made an exception for Kenny Wheeler on Gnu High.Inspired and inspirational music, imo.

The track Comba No. 3 on It Takes Two is one I have to listen to alone with eyes shut. Indescribable.
I know him from his work on David Sylvian's "Gone To Earth" . R.I.P
I’d recommend all of Wheeler’s ECM dates, barring perhaps A Long Time Ago, which wasn’t produced by Eicher and has a terrible piano that’s so bad it actually detracts from the great writing for a wonderful brass ensemble. Taylor once told me he hated it, because I asked if it was a digital piano (sounds like one to me!), he said no, just a really bad piano.
Wheeler’s return to ECM, Songs for Quintet is often unfairly overlooked. I have them all, and barring ALTA, all his ECM dates are terrific:
1975: Gnu High (ECM)
1977: Deer Wan (ECM)
1980: Around 6 (ECM)
1984: Double, Double You (ECM)
1990: Music for Large & Small Ensembles (ECM)
1990: The Widow in the Window (ECM)
1997: Angel Song (ECM)
1999: A Long Time Ago (ECM)
Some additional titles I recommend highly (some I’ve reviewed, if interested you can search at all about jazz):
1988: Flutter By, Butterfly (Soul Note)
1992: Kayak (Ah Um)
1997: All the More (Soul Note) recorded 1993
2003: Dream Sequence (Psi, 1995–2003 [2003])
2005: What Now? (CAM Jazz)
2008: Other People (CAM Jazz) with Hugo Wolf String Quartet featuring John Taylor
2011: One of Many (CAM Jazz) with John Taylor and Steve Swallow
2012: The Long Waiting (CAM Jazz)
2013: Six for Six (CAM Jazz, recorded 2008)
2015: Songs for Quintet (ECM, recorded 2013)
2015: On the Way to Two (CAM Jazz)
Sorry!!!
