    Rest in Peace, Kenny Wheeler

Heard that Mr. Wheeler has passed on this morning.
Apparently there was a "hoax" of sorts, just yesterday, but I believe this morning's news has been confirmed.

Will spin some Kenny Wheeler stuff tonight for sure.

Sad news.I'm glad he's finally at rest.

I'll spin Anthony Braxton's mid 70's records for Arista that featured Kenny Wheeler, especially Fall-1974 and Five Pieces-1975.These were my introduction to Kenny Wheeler.

    Thanks for the music.

    Great musician.

His work on all those great ECM recordings is one of the standouts of the label's catalog.

Gnu High and Azimuth will get a spin tonight.

Sad news indeed. I've been a fan since a good friend turned me on to Deer Wan in '85 or so, and I've collected the majority of his output since then. A high point of my playing life was holding down the bass chair in a sextet with him for a concert when he came as a visiting artist to the university I work at in 2011. What a thrill it was to accompany that sound, still immediately identifiable even if (only slightly) diminished by age. He also impressed me with his gracious attitude and dry sense of humor. A unique and wonderful voice both with the horn and the pen. RIP

    Word!

I first heard of him through his work on the first Bruford album.

Shortly after, it got to the point where I would buy anything with his name on it.

Currently digging 1976 from the same year.

    RIP ....

Saddened to hear the news. I'm a fan. Like another poster mentioned, if I saw Kenny Wheeler's name on a record I usually just bought it. Especially loved Gnu High and his work with David Sylvian.

Same here... and I'm ashamed to say that I haven't heard much else (except for the 16 minute track that was posted on the main board thread about him, which I dug a lot). And I call myself a jazz fan. So much music, so little time (and money)...

I'm sure we all have our favorites, but I'm quite fond of The Widow in the Window, an ECM release from the early '90s.

Guess I know what I'll be spinning when I get home...

That's the opening tune from Deer Wan. If you can only afford one CD, that's a great album!

I'm rather sure this was the first piece my friend played for me way back when that introduced me to Kenny Wheeler's playing.Braxton's mid 70's Arista records that featured Wheeler's trumpet/flugelhorn made a big impression on me.

All this(and more) is available on the Mosaic Braxton Arista box.

Jan Garbarek on alto normally I'm not a big fan of his, but I like his playing on that record.
    Dave Holland bass
    Jack DeJohnette Drums
    John Abercrombie guitar

Ralph Towner plays 12 string acoustic on one tune.

Thanks! I thought I recognized Holland, but couldn't place the other guys. Of course I was multi-tasking; reading posts on PE while listening, which isn't real listening. I'd very much like to get a hold of that album!

BTW, Wheeler also recorded an album with Michael Brecker, and the same rhythm section as Deer Wan. Double Double You is the title.
