Thread: The Pineapple Thief - Magnolia

  1. #26
Just got this last week. I'm really enjoying it - I've tried a couple of albums in the past, including Tightly Unwound, and I found those interesting and worth hearing but they just didn't click with me in terms of the songs. It seems to me that Magnolia is a much stronger set of songs, and I'm really glad I took a chance on it (after reading a good interview with Bruce Soord in the last issue of Prog - in which none of the usual clichés were made, but in which they mentioned the album features the string arranger of The Divine Comedy).
There's definitely a KScope sort of sound going on here. But where I found the last Anathema album to be rather like "more of the same", and that band seems a bit like a one trick pony (albeit a trick I like a lot), I'm really impressed by the diversity, playing, writing and production on The Pineapple Thief's Magnolia.

I listened to the first two tracks and got very tired of it. We've heard this "hard edge" quite enough now (IMO), and I can't believe some of the lyrics again start with "I want..."! Maybe I'll listen to the rest of it some day when I feel like "I want to..." ;-)
On the other hand, I still enjoy their older releases like "Variations on a dream" or "What we have sown". These are probably my favourites of them.

Kind of mediocre and uninspiring stuff. All The Wars was better.

The review in Allmusic seemed to say that this was more "song-oriented" and a little light on actual prog content. That pretty much goes with my listening experience.

Agree that the album is song orientated but..........

'a little light on prog content' what on earth does that mean. They might just have well as said that there are no widdly bits.
