I missed the last 387 Tangerine Dream albums but decided to give Raum a shot...it's really nice! Reminds me a lot of Ulrich Schnauss, even though he's not even on it!

Suh-weet! Across from it is the Jupiter-8 (but you already knew that), which I still consider his primary weapon.

I recognised that one as well. I have the Arturia version.

Didn't 007 pack one of those?

I detect "echoes" of Pink Floyd halfway through that trailer.

This is an act that should be in my wheelhouse but I can't get into them at all. Is there a "Tangerine Dream For Beginners"?

Unfortunately with a discography as varied as theirs, and a fair emphasis on longer pieces vs. short tunes, no....most of the non-boxset compilations I know of focus on a specific era of the band, and/or are rerecordings. That said...

In terms of the 70's, if you can find it the old compilation '70-'80 is a pretty reasonable survey of the 70's era, and includes a couple of bonus tracks (since released elsewhere but originally exclusive to this collection):

    https://www.discogs.com/master/45996...ne-Dream-70-80

For most here on PE, the 70's are their peak and the only music worth hearing. For a select number of us, the first half of the 80's were the bomb with lots of early synth-driven rock and soundtrack work. This compilation called Dream Sequence doesn't include ALL of my own personal favorite tracks (boo, where's Diamond Diary!?) but does balance the 70's and 80's selections a bit more evenly:

    https://www.discogs.com/master/29160...Dream-Sequence

Both are legit compilations released by Virgin at the time. Neither of these is exceptionally rare or difficult to find at a reasonable price on CD; with the release of the larger Virgin boxes a few years ago compilations like this became a bit unnecessary EXCEPT for newcomers like yourself. I don't believe either is readily available as a digital download (and unlike 99% of the bands out there, I'd discourage you from buying any compilations direct from the band or their label Eastgate, as they are commonly pretty heavily rerecorded albums that are interesting but a pale imitation of the "classics").

    Good luck!

Listen to their live album Encore from1977. If you don't like it, they're probably not for you.

My first was Rubycon back in 1973 along with Aqua by Edgar.

TD did absolutely nothing for me for 30 years. I first got hooked on Zeit about 10 years ago. Deep Space Analog Drone I guess you could call it. They had not found out about sequencers yet.

I also had an extract of Phaedra on an Ambient Comp since the 90s and I grew to like that over time. But whenever I would try to listen to the whole album on Youtube it didn't hold my interest. But... Finally... Last week I thought what the heck and got my own copy of Phaedra. The whole thing is great. Ricochet is equally good.

So my advice would be to start with Zeit. See where it leads you.

Hey, 3LB. What have you heard so far? There are some good comps, but like John says, the best comps cover specific eras.

The mid-'70s (following the first three albums) has them working with modular systems, Mellotrons, piano, guitar, tape-splicing, etc.

As the technology advanced, their sound evolved. By the time Chris Franke set up Polygon Studios, they were essentially beta-testing new toys. The early '80s finds them using the Prophet-5, PPG Wave 2, Jupiter-8, Oberheim OB-X, various ARP machines, the ubiquitous MiniMoog and other keyboards/synths, along with new digital delays and customized sequencers. Thief helped them out in a big way, and they were vocal of their gratitude toward Michael Mann for the exposure.

Years ago, I happened upon this 1999 comp (no fancy title). It has a few choice '70s nuggets interspersed among a range of early '80s gems (nothing past 1983).

    1 Beach Theme 3:44
    2 Scrap Yard 4:40
    3 Love on a Real Train 3:58
    4 Burning Bar 3:11
5 The Dream Is Always the Same 3:42
    6 Exit 5:35
7 The Big Sleep in Search of Hades 4:26
    8 Choronzon 4:08
    9 Movements of a Visionary 7:55
10 Pilots of Purple Twilight 4:21
    11 Cloudburst Flight 7:26
    12 Doctor Destructo 3:18
    13 Cinnamon Road 3:57
    14 Cherokee Lane (Live) 8:10

I think Rick Wakeman has more than 387 (LoL). And there are so many TD eras: Virgin, Private Music and Millenium to name a few (based on the labels). I also recently got the Raum CD from Lasers Edge and have enjoyed it very much. There are also so many live albums but for me, the big standout is POLAND that gets top honors and highly recommended.

I've fallen asleep to Rubycon and Phaedra numerous times (on the YT).

I've heard (in the past) the soundtracks to Firestarter, Legend and maybe another (can't remember but I'm sure it was an '80s movie).

Ive always known people who owned at least one or two TD albums. Basically, what I was hoping for was a collection of abridged works and so I think I'll track down a copy of (or I'll probably look it up on YT) Dream Sequences.

    Thanks guys

IF you feel like stretching a bit...based on the soundtracks you mentioned (which are all from the early/mid 80's era TD) you might consider Poland or Logos Live. Both are live albums and contain music otherwise unreleased at the time, but both represent high points for the era. If you liked those soundtracks you will like those albums. Logos was released by Virgin, so it's on the Dream Sequences release as well. Poland was on Jive Electro I think originally, so it's not there.

Their 1979 album Force Majeure is one of their best: one side-length suite, two pieces on Side B, including the requisite long sequencer track (real drums, too).

It's about what I paid total for the same material from the vinyl cutout bin 40 years ago.

A top 5 TD album for me but this was a road they really didn't go down again.

I think mine was $6-$7 new back in the 70's.
