I'd imagine they can count in Finnish. "Yksi, kaksi, kolme, neljä..."

Noekk's Grimalkin fits I believe although the vocals are quite dramatic which isn't the case with any of the others. Oh it's from 2005 though.
How about Thule? Although they have maybe more of a Gothic vibe than that melancholic Scandanavian flavour.

Karuna-Space For Truth from Finland, 1990 - Very similar to Popol Vuh from the mid-to-late 70s

On the last two albums, Thomas Johnson is a writing partner, so there is definitely an aspect of it in the music.

I always loved that Morte Macabre album, and always hoped they'd release a second one. As for Landberk, their debut is still my favourite.

Noekk are from Germany, that's not Scandinavia I guess ;-).

    What about
PPRY (aka Project) from Finland? Their albums "project: <<name stolen>>" and "Raising the Skeletons of Fire By Hand" are fitting perfectly imho.
    Gazpacho (Norway) Sepia all over.
    Viima (Finland)
    Kuusumun Profeetta (Finland)
    Gargamel (Norway)
    Mikromodas (Norway)
    Stille Opprör (Norwy)
And one fantastic new runner-up: Kaukasus (Norway/Sweden)

Good call on Noekk, I guess I had a brain cramp as I was thinking they were from Norway. I really dig Mikromidas' debut and Viima as well. Gargamel are another excellent band in the VDGG style with lots of mellotron if I remember correctly.

Don't know most of these, but I agree abut Gargamel... Gazpacho, however is more neo-prog than retro-prog to my ears

How about Per Lind Project (not sure they've been mentioned yet)?

Ravana (Norway) is also a candidate at Sepia-toned prog
Simon Says was almost retro-prog enugh with ther debut, but Paradise Square was defintely ne-sunding to me.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Does Bo Hansson's Lord of the Rings count?

I kind of put the 70s stuff in a different mental category, but I don't know what the hell sepia-toned is supposed to mean anyway . But I would associate Hansson with Flasket Brinner, Kebnekajse, Harvester/Intl Harvester/Parson Sound... all highly recommended, but different pile.

A band from Finland that never good much praise, but I really like them (sadly they folded after 1 and 1/2 album)

Porcelain Moon (I think that this track is sung in swedish but the they are from Finland)

Sepia is the beige-yellowish colour that take on old b&w photos or (news)paper with age. It's often become synnym of old time and can even be a signal of a flashback in comics, for ex

I meant in terms of music.

Actually let me just say, because I don't mean to be snarky about it... I get what is being asked about... melancholy Scandinavian-folk influenced prog. I just thought it was kind of a funny term.

Which is exactly why I mentioned Hansson. When I listen to LOTR, it strikes me as the spiritual fore bearer of all the modern melalcholy Scandinavian stuff.

I should play that again I guess. A lot of my vinyl gets less rotation because it's more work .

actually, it was the first time I hear this expression for music as well, but I seemed to understand it right away , et least I think I did (and think it's a cute expression).

The OP list seemed to give a hint that it was talking of what's called scandinavian 90's & 00's retro prog

Is the timespan from the ninetines to now long enough to develop some kind of sepia?

    Well:

I believe if it's the early 90s the answer is yes, but if it's late-90s or last decade it's neo-sepia.
