Real To Reel is, essentially, the best album that Seventies REO Speedwagon never made. Very different for Starcastle but an excellent AOR record, nevertheless.

Agreed on Twenty. Very solid. As are Endangered Species and Last Of A Dyin' Breed.
It's a real shame that so many fans keep their ears closed when it comes to the posy-crash band because they...
The three that might make my top five Skynyrd list would be:
The Last Rebel
Edge Of Forever (probably my favourite release by the band)
God & Guns
But really, with the possible exception of...
Great band.
I'm in the (small) camp that regards the post-crash albums to be as essential as the '70s ones. Indeed, I think some of their very best records are the later ones.
The Johnny &...
I think that Barclay James Harvest wrote the sweetest melodies in either prog or pop-rock so I'd nominate:
Time Honoured Ghosts (prog)
Caught In The Light (pop-rock)
Love going to shows but I'm not prepared to pay stupid amounts of money for tickets. Lots of bands I love have come through town over the last decade or so but if the charge more than £50 (including...
Didn't know about the third album, The first two are excellent.
Well, I like eight of them at least, with Thick As A Brick and Black Noise being particularly favourites. As with pretty much everyone else who's posted so far, I can confirm that my own top ten...
I agree with all of the above.
Strangely enough I prefer the version of Tam Lin on Sense Of Occasion. Think it suits Simon Nicol's voice better than Sandy's.
There were a bunch of bits and bobs that I didn't have so the boxed set is a real treat for me.
Great band. I've just sent for the new Cherry Red boxed set.
Discovered Mason Proffit recently. I file them under country-rock rather than folk-rock but it matters not. The music is sublime.
Frogmorton's only album from 1976 is a real treat:

They didn't have a fiddle player which was unusual for the time.
Top Five Bands & favuorite releases:
1. Lindisfarne - Sleeplesss Nights
2. Fairport - Tipplers Tales
3. Steeleye Span - Below The Salt
4. Tanglefoot - Full Throated Abandon
5. Jack The Lad -...
Ha, ha! :)
I think Kansas have often been AOR - which is a good thing, to my ears - but I will happily concede that they have also been a glorious, soaring prog band. :up
I was (and am) an AOR fan so bands like Styx, Kansas and Asia were gateway, for sure, as well as getting into Starcastle through their REO Speedwagon connection. Possibly because I heard them first,...
I'm not so sure. Greg is a fine songwriter but BBT only made the move from decent band to great one when David started to help shoulder the writing burden, at least in my opinion. Their styles...
I recommend Peter Knight's current band, Gigspanner to anybody who's not heard them. Really exciting.

Yeah, they've been on an excellent run in recent times but Dodgy Bastards is particularly special.
Love Steeleye. I like them all but my top five albums would be:
1. Below The Salt
2. Bedlam Born
3. Please To See The King
4. All Around My Hat
5. Dodgy Bastards
I go to shows whenever they...
Got into Seatrain recently. Excellent band.
Great to know I'm in good company. :)
Indeed! :D
1. Neil Young (twice). On each occasion he was bored and disinterested and the music came across as third rate grunge. I'm a fan of Neil's but I wouldn't go and see him again.
2. Porcupine Tree. A...
Eric Clapton:
Colin Carpet
Clacton Pier
I like the narration. Adds a lot of atmosphere.
Having said that, as good as it is, I don't think The Empathy Machine ever quite reaches the height of their debut album, from 2006. That one's a...
Greg's an excellent songwriter and I like all Big Big Train's albums but for me, they went from a fine band to a remarkable one with the addition of David's songwriting. The warp and weft of their...
I was really surprised when I first read that. It remains the only thing I've heard by Sly Stone. He's great on I Can Fly, though.
Love the Mike Murphy era. The song Lost In A Dream is one of my favourite REO tunes. An early co-write for Bruce Hall, too.
They played near me, just before The Madness hit but it wasn't advertized very well so I manged to miss them. Fingers crossed they get back to the UK at some point soon.
As for their records, I...
Likewise!
Great singer & songwriter though, and one of my favourite front-men.
He's a great player, that's for sure.
No need. REO are one of the best live bands on the planet. They could follow anyone. :)
Tuna Fish is also my favourite. Also agree about C.O.W.. Full of fantastic songs. Love to hear them do Lightning or (I Believe) Our Time Is Gonna Come, in concert.
The Mike Murphy albums are mostly forgotten, sadly. He was a fine writer & singer and combined well style-wise with Gary Richrath.
There was never more than a couple of ballads per album (apart from compilations, obviously). They've always been a great rock band.
Good point!
Nice setlist! Good to see Son Of A Poor Man back in.
REO is my favourite band. All era sound great to my ears. It would be great if they played a bit longer and threw in a few more deep cuts,...
Still one of my favourite Marillion albums, all these years later.
Well, that clears that one up. Cheers!
I have a copy of Two For The Show for completism's sake but I'm not much of a live album fellow so I don't remember ever listening to it.
I've always pronouced it Mar-eye-a-bronn. No logic behind this though so it's likely to be wrong. :)
One from each studio album:
1. Debut: Death Of Mother Nature: Suite
2. Song Of America: Lamplight Symphony
3. Masque: The Pinnacle
4. Leftoverture: Carry On Wayward Son
5. Point Of Know...
Bought my copy today and listened to it once, so far. First impressions are very favourable. Didn't need to occupy myself with anything else while it was playing, just let it wash over me. Very...
So, I've not got the mind boggling number of albums that some here possess (kudos!) but barring about 150 I haven't catalogued yet, my collection breaks down like this
'50s - 2
'60s - 120
'70s -...
Think I'd rank BBT's albums like this:
5/5
1. English Electric: Full Power
2. Folklore
3. Grimspound
4. Grand Tour
5. Second Brightest Star
4/5
£30 on UK Amazon. Not as bad but still pricey. Almost half the price on Discogs - Cheapest being £16.76
I'm not keen on Steven Wilson's remix work. Wouldn't want him anywhere near Kansas.
Probably my second favourite Kansas album after Leftoverture. Consistently brilliant from first to last.
REO Speedwagon drummer Alan Gratzer.
I'm always happy to hear new music but I'm only willing to pay for it, if it's album length, which includes some EPs, these days.
For all that it's shoddily put together, just looking at the actual bands listed, while my own selection would look very different, apart from The Mars Volta and Tool, whose music I am unfamiliar...
If a band/performer wants me to spend money on their music then they need to release albums. I will happily stream/bootleg singles.
I've really enjoyed the last two studio records so I fully expect to get something out of this one too. Bit concerned that Steve Howe's in the producer's chair but I'm mildly confident he'll do a...
The current line-up is great. Wish they'd release an album of all-new originals though.
Wales well beaten, as expected. As usual, my support now goes to Germany but I wouldn't be disappointed if Denmark took the trophy so at least I'd be able to say thay we were knocked out by the...
Never expect any list (except one compiled by me) to get near my personal taste so loads of my favourites missing. The Eighties are especially under-represented, I think, and if Songs From The Wood...
Well, we've got Denmark then.
They're a great side, better than Wales, for sure, but we've got a small chance. We've possess plenty of fight, if not an over-abundance of skill.
Happy enough that Wales are through. We're not very good but we're dogged. Looking like Finland or Russia, with a smaller possibility of Denmark or Belgium next.
