I am also into it. It gets way better. I read the book and was very lukewarm about it and don't even remember if the plot is the same. I don't think the translation into English was very good.

I never had an issue with the sound of Machine Head. My problem was how clean and precise the playing was. The live versions of most of the tracks were much preferable to me.

I prefer the 50th Anniversary remaster of the original 1970 record. I think there's a 3 CD deluxe version out there, too, but it looks like it contains a lot of extra material, demos and such.

I always find it somewhat surprising how many slag "Tales". I guess you had to be a 15 yr. old when listening to it upon release; it seemed to be revealing the secrets of the universe at that time!
