Gandalf's stuff fits that description perfectly. Magic Theatre is his best. New Age + Prog elements.

Hey All,
Will be in Seattle next week and hope to scout for some vintage vinyl while there. Not interested, much, in new vinyl. Any recs for best Seattle area record stores with the best vinyl...
On original vinyl:
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Yes - The Yes Album
Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
Bruford - One of a Kind
Instabuy. Love this band. I've enjoyed ever one of their albums.
I'll be in Paris next week and plan on hunting for some good vinyl while there. Any recommendations where I would be most likely to find some good vintage EU prog lp's, Kraut rock, etc.? Thanks in...
No matter where you are in the Bay Area, a trek to Amoeba Music on Haight Street across from Golden Gate Park is a must. Its huge. Its iconic. I always go home with several things. Great hunting. ...
Apparently this guy was a fan.

Hey folks, I'll be in Seattle this week. I hope to scout for some prog vinyl. What are the stores to visit?
Steven Wilson (duh)
Argos
Tangent
BBT
Wobbler
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the mighty D.F.A yet.

great band. I enjoy all of their releases. Moroccan Roll, Masques, Unorthodox Behavior, Product, Do They Hurt, are my favorites in that order.
I have a ritual before shows at the Regency where I grab food and a couple of pints at Tommy's Joynt right down the street (1101 Geary). Its a San Francisco institution dive bar (that was featured in...
Marillion begins their NA tour in San Francisco tonight at the Regency. I'll be there. Who else?
I've shelled out for this cow 5 times. And will do so again if I get the chance. Worth it.
I get that. However, these live performances of this most special music has been just so damn good. Honestly, its likely they play this music better than Genesis did. We won't have many more...
You got the album this weekend, and its Monday now. How can you possibly expect to grasp the full measure of this album so quickly? Most good prog, IMO, reveals itself after MANY listens. Close to...
Seriously gifted drummer. I wouldn't enjoy Genesis albums half as much without his signature drumming. Loved his emotive vocals too - few are better. He gets a bad wrap by some here. Crazy.
great description.
love this album. Chris Squire on vocals was a nice addition. I know they are working on another one right now. I hope they have retained their vocalist.

Went to the show at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA last night. I must say, it was one of the best times I've seen the band - full of energy, great renditions of the tunes, band seemed happy, no...
And then there was this...Yes playing Watcher of the Skies w/ Peter Gabriel on vocals:

OK, so where are all the show reviews? How are the boys playing? I'm going to see them tomorrow night at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga.
surprised to hear that. I couldn't disagree more. To each his own... Perilous has really grown on me to the point where I think it may be their best. I think Davison's vocals are a strong part of...
this was a grower for me. very enjoyable.
great list from Mr. Beggs, who himself would make my top 10.
Good one
Seriously?
I haven't ventured too far into the avantguard side of things, and certainly not from this decade, but I want to. Care to suggest an album?
Yes, I meant Discipline (the red album) :-)
a snoozer of a list but then again this was an era of some slim pickings. I agree fully with Marillion's Misplaced Childhood, and the GLARING omission of King Crimson's Red.
ABWH?...maaaybe....

For me, a band with perhaps the biggest delta between the appeal of their album artwork and appeal of their music.
I remember too well my experience with the "new" Crimson in October 1981. I was a sophomore in HS and had tickets to see them. I had yet to hear the album. My buddy played a cassette of Discipline...
No disrespect taken. Please know I was half-serious anyway.
Its no a wonder at all that old bands tour as nostalgia acts, to answer your question. That's where the interest lies, that's where...
probably not. Note I said "check out" the merch table, not "buy something" from the merch table. I doubt they'll have anything I would buy but its fun to look. An ARW shirt with Roger Dean logo?...
TR said: "Thinking about a couple of songs from Big Generator and definitely playing 'Shoot High Aim Low.'"
cool, that'll give me ample time to take a piss, get another pint, and check out the...
Although I'm going to go see ARW, and looking forward to it, I'm overall feeling this is a diversion from touring IOK and doing a more collaborative follow-up with Roine.
Agree. Love this song, and the entire album really. I met Jon when he was promoting it at a record store in King of Prussia, PA. great memory.

As much as I'm a fan of JA, Henry is spot on. I've read many interviews with bandmates and Anderson collaborators over the years (decades!) about JA's controlling nature. Now, I'm not criticizing him...
OK, I've listened to this a half dozen times now. What a wonderful album. Is it perfect? No. But damn, so much tasty stuff on here if you are into classic JA. I would not have imagined we'd hear...
+1 well stated Gizmotron
Love that idea (TFK + JA). Although I think its unlikely, I've been surprised by alot these past few years.
Dear Progressive Ears,
I hate "First Impressions".
That is all...
If it is "extremely dense" and approaches Yes music of yore, then, in my view, it would take some time to grasp it / appreciate it. All of the music I love the most has one thing in common - I...
Man, that statement rubs me the wrong way - that I should listen to top-rated albums to "improve" my musical taste. It also comes across of elitist.
statistics have no place in prog, music in general, or any artistic endeavor. The rankings would only be meaningful to me if was based on people who have *exactly* the same musical taste as I...
Has SW done a remix of Tales yet?
Gong's Shamal, during Gong's jazz/fusion era, has Mike Howlett on vocals.
I generally like and greatly value lists but agree that when someone posts a list of 20+ albums to very specific recommendation questions it actually LOSES value. There are some who seem to just cut...
I hear it, you don't.
One more...French prog space rock extraordinaire Pulsar - The Strands of the Future (1976).

Pentacle was a French band clearly influenced by Crimson. Even the vocalist reminds of Greg Lake. This is from 1975.

Mirthrandir is a 70's...
love these threads. great ways to discover bands. keep it coming.
Here are my contributions. I'm sticking close to what the OP said ie less known bands that are in the same vein as classic Yes...
yea, you need to do some research before buying reissued vinyl. I have Nektar's Journey... on Purple Pyramid. It sounds good, not great. I never had the original, super hard to find and expensive...
Hugely interested in this as Eddie Jobson, in my book, is one of the biggest talents in this genre. Unfortunately, we didn't get our fill of him back in the day as he became disillusioned with the...
great band. More love for the Jon Davison trilogy...especially if you are a Yes fan. Not just because Jon D is a dead ringer for Jon Anderson but the song writing is strongly in that vein but with...
couldn't agree more! Their first 2 albums were really strong and these discs return to my CD player and ipod often. Lady of the Lake is early Crimson meets Uriah Heep. In Sounds of the Apocolypse...
me either!
