Thanks!
For Girls Who Grow Plump is a very VERY fine album. I've loved it since I first heard it. Maybe not quite up there with Grey & Pink - but different stylistically and equally valid. And possibly a...
The Blind Dog comment is attributed to Noel Coward. The "St. Dunstans" referred to is (was) a care home for blind and partially sighted people.
Both Stunts and St Dunstans are weak albums. Both...
That part is achieved with an echo. He only plays 4th notes.

No. Bliss!
Bloom is wonderful!!!
Shamal is pretty good too. I love Cat in Clarks' Shoes, especially. Jazzy, funky, wonky, odd.
Dreadfully sad news.
A talented and lovely fella.
Leaves a tremendous body of work.
RIP. :(
It's a melancholy album, but none the worse for that. Certainly of both our fraught time now and our time of life.
I think it's your finest too, Kavus. Thanks!
- Nick.
They did mix "Free Hand" and "interview" in 4.0 (i.e. quadrophonic) and those were released on DVD in 2012. Very good they are, too!
But one has to have realistic expectations. That would never happen.
And I never thought something like this would - so it's a big plus!
That is exciting!
It's under-rated, I find. My favourite. The most accomplished.
And if I really like the album I must be Hip to the Hip to the Jag Jag.
I had to look up Daniel Clowes.
Great title though. I am definitely hip to that jag.
Excellent!
And after the lockdown, "Now We Have Live Music Again". The tour.
"Now We Have Time"?
Very nice, Kavus.
Fantastic! Get it today. Bandcamp are waiving their fees, so the artists get more.
It's s great cover and works well with the title concept - presenting the "pop" and "progressive" sides of Ant's music, split across two sides.
By the way, we call it "bar football", not foosball....
Sides is an odd album. Ironically, despite the jabs at the music business, this one was heavily pushed by his label. If you read the sleeve notes on one of the re-releases (sorry, I don't now...
And did you?
Good news!
I've listened to the latest vinyl release of Selling England now - and I have to say it sounded a lot better than I remember the CD version of this mix.
I confess I have not listened to the stereo...
1978 looks like higher revenues than any year in the 1980s:-
14001
See...
Where can that be found? I'm not sure I've ever heard that.
I'm not sure I agree with that assertion! The record industry exploded in the 1970s. Huge vinyl sales. Young people had sponds then, for sure.
I think I shall! I was think Selling England or Trick, actually.
...which is basically why I started this thread.
I felt the the stereo masters (on SACD, CD) sounded harsh and a lot of low-frequency detail was lost. I don't know how much of this is attributable...
Any professional recording studio is full of racks of compressors. They are essential tools in recording acoustic instruments and voices. Adding warmth getting them to sit well in the mix whilst...
...I wonder if the compression is perceptively greater or lesser in the vinyl releases of the new stereo mixes.
I feel compelled to point out that even 16/44.1 digital audio (CD) has greater dynamic range than vinyl - therefore the medium does not require compression. Indeed compression is used selectively by...
Fair point.
:D :D :D
"So I hear you're a racist now, father".
Thanks TC!
Thanks TC,
I'm confused though. You say you don't like Nick Davis's stereo mixes, but you go on to say that yu like the vinyl boxset and those vinyl reissues of Selling England and Seconds Out....
Thanks Matt.
Has it ever seemed to you that the camel on the horizon on the (original) front cover of Caravan's debut album is very large.
I mean - even if it is perched on the wall (rather than on the...
Hi folks,
I am curious whether the current vinyl releases (available in the UK) feature the new stereo mixes or the original mixes.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks,
- Nick.
I bought a new OLED TV and this BluRay was one of the first discs I reached for. It really does look stunning!
Thanks for the heads up.
Not something I'd turn to often - but has its place. I enjoyed the first one more than the second.
I'm not especially a fan of the first one. They hit their stride with Tim Smith produced "Bodies" though.
"Obsessive" remains by favourite though, and by some distance. This one was produced by...
What's wrong with Steinbergers, Matt? :-D
That was a bridge too far for me!!! Actually, probably the the bridge after the bridge too far.
Obsessive is still one of my go-to albums. A real pick-me-up.
Listened last night. I liked it just as it was.
The issue isn't the speed of the performance, but the speed of playback of the recording. Of course if that's wrong, the pitches are affected.
Others have commented that sometimes producers decide...
Or husband? ;-)
Someone needs to add some 12-string!
Nice to see Bandcamp struggling a little to cope, as many people must be taking advantage of the opportunity to support the musicians.
I picked up a couple of Kavus' releases, some Matt Baber...
I had a very similar reaction to some parts of that album when I was first getting to know it. Joyous!
I am sorry for your predicament - but believe me, it is worth the wait!
Thanks for that. A very enjoyable read.
For anyone who loves this album - as I do - the new DVD/BluRay release of the live version from 2018 (recorded at the RAH) is highly recommended!!!
How sad. I'd kill to hear Awaken in 5.1
What about a 5.1 of Going for the One? Has that been discussed?
Great LP!!!!!
