I, for one, welcome our new ReconstruKction overlords!
I HATED the original sound, it felt stifled and dull. I exclusively listened to live versions of the songs on this album... until now. It...
I'm with you on this. And it didn't take very long to rip the CDs either, just about an hour last night. The DVDs and blu-ray will obviously take a bit longer but it will be well worth it.
John, I really enjoyed your review. The contributions by Pat are fascinating: it's so interesting getting insider views about the music.
My box just came in yesterday, it looks like I'll be...
Ouch! My wallet... I guess I'll be parting with even more of my hard earned cash.
It's the best of the lot, for sure, and it changed my view of that lineup too.
You're not the only one who feels this way :)
My first exposure to the band was the Sleepless video, on MTV of all places, so that period will always be special to me. Was just listening to the...
I've been digesting the "new" Frakctured, and I have to agree. To me it's more like what the song would've sounded like if they toured it before they recorded the album.
My fav PG album by far at this point. This album and "Three of a Perfect Pair" were revolutionary for me as a teenager and shaped my musical tastes from then on. Strangely, this is the only full PG...
I, for one, am eagerly waiting to part with my hard earned cash for the Heaven and Earth box. I love the all KC eras, but at this point it's the 90s-00s music that I keep coming back to.
definitely an auto-buy for me.
I never thought that anything would get me to listen to 2112 again, but that was epic :)
Don't forget P6.
What's on his schedule during this tour ;)
"Metal" Crimson is definitely my favorite Crimson, doesn't matter which version of the band. I'd love to hear them do "The Great Deceiver" live.
I would have to think that FraKctured would have to be in the top three hardest guitar parts, but I'm not a guitar player...
Thanks for another great review John! I love how deeply you get into the music.
As far as the current lineup goes, more than any previous lineup the recorded music doesn't do nearly enough justice...
I recently bought the New Haven 2003 disc. It seems like he took his intensity up to 11 for that last show. His playing on Red was pretty much saying "you're gonna miss me when I'm gone". I love his...
I loved Discipline from the first I heard it. It remains one of the few "perfect" albums for me (check my pulse if I don't react with joy to hearing any of it played live, including the latest...
I'm right there with you :)
Imagine the wealth of Level 5s to choose from.
Funny, I found almost the opposite in the Port Chester show. It seemed to me that Fripp was playing a LOT more than I would have thought based on other peoples reviews. I had a very good view of both...
I was at the Port Chester show last night as well (9th row center). Some observations:
1. The sound was MUCH better than the '14 show I saw. The mix, clarity and power were leagues better.
2. The...
Belews voice is so iconic (like it or hate it) that it makes total sense for Jakko to not attempt to duplicate his style. I'll hear for myself tomorrow night with and try to have an open mind, if...
While I don't think that any of us are happy about this topic, I think we veer into dangerous ground when we begin to psychoanalyze based on snippets of public statements. Who of us has had any...
This is really too bad. The two of them (together with four other excellent musicians) created some of my favorite music ever. It really sounds like reconciliation is unlikely at this point.
Did...
I just forked over some of my hard earned cash for the Port Chester show, orchestra center. Sound should be much better than the last time I saw them.

Me too. I was 17 when I heard the opening bass riff to "Sleepless" coming out of the TV (we had MTV on in the background). I was instantly hooked and there was no looking back :)
It took me a...
The '00s band was a beast live! I didn't think it would happen, but it's certainly now my favorite era for KC.
I don't see it there now, but if there's going to be a Port Chester date, I guess I'll have to fork over more of my hard earned pay ;)
I can confirm this from personal experience. I take a medication for seizures that's also use as an anti-depressant. If I miss even one day I start feeling it both physically and mentally.
I think that this may be part of the reason why Adrian isn't in this formation. If he's the primary songwriter, then we're verging into "Adrian Belew and the King Crimson All-Stars", which I...
I always liked the vibe he created for this movie/album, there's some really great music. I look at it like any other good soundtrack: there's some great music and some filler used as atmosphere.
Absolutely,
I love the sound be brought to the 72-74 band. I'd be interested to see what he'd bring to the band now. I enjoyed what he did with Stick Men on the Midori album.
Red it is. Neither are favorites of mine, but I still listen to Red while I haven't wanted to listen to Court for some time now.
I'm very sad to say that I agree completely with your opinions...
I've been torn about seeing them in '17 since I was pretty disappointed in the sound when I saw them in NYC in the last tour. What he's saying makes some sense (though I only needed one show to know...
Ugh. I love my smart playlists. This is another reason that I'm glad my ipod classic is still alive.
Great review John!
I'm loving the box set so far. However, it's really adding to my regret that I never saw this group live. I discovered the band just after the 84 tour.
I think that you could fairly say that both are/were nostalgia acts, either in part or in full, since the majority of what they're playing is "legacy" music rather than mostly new music with some...
I just got mine yesterday along with Radical Action. I've only listened to Beat and ToaPP so far and they sound great. This lineup was my introduction to KC back when I was in high school, and I had...
I think it "seems" like a cool idea, but I feel that the way they're doing it loses so much of the intensity. I really felt the difference when I saw them last year. When listening to the double-duo...
Yep. And I bet Adrian knows all about Fripp's "quirks" better than most people. As was said above, if his feelings were hurt is was probably because of the way it was communicated. But even so, who...
Agree with Nog. He was the reason I didn't miss Adrian's manic soloing. Actually, his playing was THE highlight for me.
Though I wasn't too crazy about this formation the first time around, I'll...
This one's is a real mixed bag for me. IMO, the Lizard suite is by far the best of all pre-Larks stuff, but I lost interest in the rest pretty quickly. Even the Wilson re-mix couldn't get me back...
I certainly know about Darcy James Argue, just got the new CD Saturday. I'm VERY excited about this release, I'll be immersing myself in it this week.
Yes, the production of TCoL was disappointing to say the least, it really lacks life. All of the tracks sound MUCH better live, even on relatively poor recordings. It would be awesome if they can...
Thanks for the review, you always do a great job with these!
I'm still not convinced by this version of the band, but I'll probably buy it anyway since KC is one of the handful of bands where I'm...
Nice! I'm very excited for this one, Stand Up is my favorite Tull album by far.
I first heard this album in college when I picked up this, LTiA, and Red at the same time, and it has been my favorite KC album until TPTB came out (they're pretty much equal in my eyes now). I...
wow, you have a wife that likes prog? That's awesome! I thought I was doing well to have a wife that likes baseball. She HATES my music :(
I agree with Wilson (even though he can be insufferable sometimes). I was a HUGE Gabriel fan when I was a teenager. PG3 & Security are still some of my favorite music ever.
I think that eventually...
I don't know if these are the "best", but my two favorites are "Dead Man" and "Dr. Strangelove".
B&W made the subject matter of both even darker, not to mention how well both were filmed. The death...
Great review John! The album is fantastic. I'm definitely going to catch them when they come back to the NY area.
TOAPP was my introduction to KC and is still one of my favorites. Of all things, I saw the Sleepless video on MTV and was hooked ever since. The Industry - Dig Me - No Warning - Larks 3 sequence is...
For me, it's TPtB->Thrak->P2=P3->TCoL->P4=P6->P1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Scarcity
I was so excited with TPtB when it came out because it just clicked with me. I felt like they were at the top of their...
Yes. I'm really liking it so far.
I went on a binge this past week:
Project 3 - Live in Alexandria VA
Project 2 - Live in Chicago IL
King Crimson - Thrak 40th Anniversary
King Crimson - Rehearsals and Blows
GoGo Penguin - V2.0...
Yes! And I love his manic signing on schizoid man too
Oh, I should have mentioned this: regardless of my feelings about this iteration of the band, your review was excellent as usual. I always look forward to them.
I'm with you on this, except for L5. I have a playlist of only Larks & L5 tracks (yes, I need a psychiatrist) it's the weakest one of all. Mel's solo at the end is excellent though.
+1
I saw them live in NYC, and just downloaded the Toronto show. I've been trying to put my finger on why this line-up doesn't stand up to the past. While this recording is a thousand times better...
I really enjoy the flux app and as a Belew fan it's provides a fantastic immersion into his sound. That said, I've really wanted to be able to integrate the snippets from flux into my iTunes...
