So, anything new we should know about?
I for one would be interested in anything Phideaux brings our way. it's been a while.
You're probably right if you're comparing with the last 2 albums on which he plays the vast majority of the guitars and keyboards.
But I'm guessing many parts on the new album that you might think...
Reviews will certainly show up and Greg Spawton will write about it in his blog, available on the band's website. The latest installment, published today, stops just before the cruise.
There's definitely a SB vibe going on with NDV writing more and taking more of a leading role in the band on the last 2 or 3 albums. The most obvious is All The Love We Can Give from the Common...
Obviously with a change of singers and an evolution of their sound in recent years, the band is bound to lose some fans (and hopefully gain others).
Although it's still early days, I'm really...
Indeed, yet this is probably what one could realistically expect. It's the reason why it's hard for a band like BBT to tour the US. It's a big country with fans spread across it. It's great that they...
You have every right to prefer Bravin to Longdon and should feel free to say so. If this album should be the one to make BBT finally click for you, it's fine.
There is indeed a common sound between these bands. It's also true that after Trueack and Timms' acrimonious split in 2014, they each used the songs they had written together, which eventually...
I agree: a band that's always been "nice" but never "great", although it always seems they have the potential to make that truly great record that never comes.
I also agree that Dissolution is their...
I remember liking it when I heard it live last September. I didn't remember the wooooh chanting though, which sounds a bit too arena rock to me. I'll probably get used to it by the next couple of...
A winter album if there ever was one!
I'm aware of the reason for which she left and FWIW was really looking forward to her further integration in the band as I thought she was an excellent vocalist. From an instrumental point of view,...
Opinions about the song have definitely been divided among the fanbase. They gave Carly Bryant a chance at songwriting, which is always a nice way integrate new members into the band. It was a...
Many french people are convinced to this day that Pink Floyd means Pink Flamingo, and that Floyd is the English word for Flamingo. There's even a music shop near Montpellier in the South of France...
I'm always amazed at how most prog reviewers have absolutely no ear for the sound quality of a record, and I'm not talking audiophile ears here.
There's a Tangent album called Down and Out in...
Thanks for the link, I was not aware of this interview. I had never heard Greg say this before but I guess I agree with him: both Common Ground and Welcome to the Planet are not BBT's best work but...
Sometimes it takes a couple of albums to find a new direction, but I expect them to find it this time around.
I would appreciate a link to the interview that was mentioned, I don't think I heard it.
Their music is so sticky sweet it's easy to get an overdose.
The only album of theirs that I listen to occasionally is Blomljud: there's some beautiful stuff on this (especially those harmony vocals...
There was clearly a slight shift in the band's sound on those two albums as well as a change towards more personnal lyrics. I expect the new album to move forward in that direction.
Let's face it,...
Thanks for the information guys.
So if we're talking late 1968, that's definitely not when Phil auditioned for Genesis, as that was in the summer of 1970.
I'd have to check the timeline, but if he...
Either this or Bruford had rejoined before Phil even got time to make up his mind. I'm not a Yes expert but how long was Bruford out of Yes back then and did they carry on with anyone else in the...
Funny that you spelled it that way as there is indeed a trace of Smashing Pumpkins in his singing, especially in the early days.
The 3000 Days compilation is a cool summary of their first 10 years. Yet placing all those songs together also reveals a certain sameness due to the fact that Soord always used the same basic...
Jesus! Some fans' sense of ownership and self-importance is just incredible! And somehow it was considered OK to publish this on one of the leading prog sites.
...
I would expect him to be a little more restrained considering the others (especially Petrucci and Rudess) have been running the band without him for 13 years. After all, he's been a little less...
You don't know that (yet). Maybe Mangini wanted out and they took the opportunity to bring back Portnoy.
Anyway, Mangini is super cool about it, as always.
I'm not as suprised as I would have been a few years ago. Portnoy playing on Petrucci's last solo album and touring with him was a sign that some things had changed. Plus Portnoy seemed a bit short...
Most of this thread is from before the album release.
Since release date, nothing much seems to be happening. I've seen reviews on the usual sites, but usually I see people raving or ranting about...
Am I the only one feeling a strange absence of buzz around this album, here or elsewhere?
Usually, a new SW album gets discussed for weeks after release, but this time, nothing much seems to be...
This crossed my mind as well 🤣
Less unrealistic would be a live version of the whole album complementing a Bright mix / Dark mix package. It's actually a cool idea.
Seriously, I have a feeling that if a physical release ever...
Great post, Mike. This pretty much mirrors my own experience seing him here in Paris at the very same venue and with the same friend as in 1993, when I was only 16 years old.
I'd actually prefer this as I would probably go for the Dark side version only if given a choice. But I doubt this is a viable option, commercially speaking. The CD buying public is getting smaller...
The Birght Side mixes were done by Mark "Spike" Stent and the Dark Side mixes by Tchad Blake.
The aim is to provide two different approaches to the songs.
It's clearly a question of personal taste...
Yeah, it seems a lot of bands that have reformed in recent years started with a festival or two to find their feet, before lauching a new album. Rikard hasn't released an album in 3 years which is...
I hope this is not off topic but it seemed like a good thread to ask.
The last TFK album I've heard is Desolation Rose which I like for its darker tone. So I've yet to dip my toes in the latest...
So apparently they're playing the We Låve Rock festival in Norway in May.
I agree. I have been impressed with Tayeb's voice on previous SW songs she appears on. She used her husky voice on occasion and to great effect, in a rather controlled way. Here she uses it for the...
I might change my mind when I hear the whole thing but at this point I don't think I've ever been so underwhelmed by camples from a SW album.
With every new album of his, I haven't always...
I've never heard Water's demos for the album but I've always imagined them to be quite bland and unremarkable. I think the band felt that way too but had no choice but to go with Waters's vision as...
I'm starting to wonder if the new album will be released this year.
Judging by their FB posts, the new album seems to be nearly finished and on the verge of being released since at least mid-2022.
To me it sounds like his whole solo carreer rolled up into one track. I'll need more time to figure out if this actually works.
The song sounds like a continuation of The Future Bites but it looks pretty certain that the album will be more diverse than that.
It's pretty much in line with something like King Ghost.
There doesn't seem to be much to it taken on its own but I agree that it will be interesting to see how it fits in with the rest of the album.
Well, I'm taking that back, then...
I am aware that he has strong opinions, although I don't understand Hebrew.
What I meant was that he probably uses strong language in a much cleverer context...
Indeed. The Brooklands sequence is a suite made of On the Racing Line from Grimspound and the original Folklore version of Brooklands. Both tracks share a common musical theme although they weren't...
Thanks.
This is not very good IMO. Hearing these lyrics sung rather than reading them doesn't make them any better I'm afraid.
It's always slightly embarassing to hear people who are not native...
Not having heard the album, I had to go check those were actual lyrics!
Re: Harmony Codex, I would be surprised if it was released in late September since there is still no official announcement...
...and was extensively discussed here and elsewhere when it was first published IIRC.
Preorders now open:...
Fair enough. But when did the lyrics and concept ever take precedence over the music? Maybe in musicals but I'm not even sure.
Same for me. I absolutely love The Rotters' Club but can't connect with the first one!
I never understood how he could think that his affirmation that the others contributed next to nothing could hold water.
Waters did come up with the lyrics and the concept but is this all the...
It's probably in line with his obsessive need to remind everyone that he was the sole genius behind all the Pink Floyd classics and downplaying the contributions from the other guys.
Not sure new...
Itunes does it too
The digital version of the album even had the transitions between the parts tampered with so they could play better as individual tracks. At least the sub parts flowed properly on the CD. I actually...
Absolutely. The bridge on the studio version is one rare instance in the Genesis catalogue where I feel they didn't develop the arrangement to its full potential. This live version achieves this...
That's pretty much my take on Somewhere Else and the tour that followed. I like the album a lot, and the fact that they didn't follow on the fact that Marbles was considered a return to form but went...
The link to the video you mention would be appreciated.
It's not really fair to compare a lyricist who is writing in his mothertongue and one who isn't and relies on all the worn out phrases he's heard in other songs.
