I think his sound choices sometimes raise a few questions …
I respect your opinion of course.
To me The Wake stands out so much compared to so much of the neo prog at the same time. The punk-ish attitude. The darkness. The chord sequences (the other bands...
I think the whoas is the highlight …
Enjoying what seems to be Powell’s favorite fill. Listen to the soft (and great) middle section of the Miracle and also in the beginning of Learning to Fly :-)
Best blog on the Internet
That was amateurish
On an Island is amazing.
Rattle is poor though. Apart from the Wright tribute.
I think it is a mixed bag.
Harridan is better here than on the studio album. Fear of a BP is also great. But there are a number of songs that do not reach these heights.
Oh Drive the Hearse is...
A masterpiece. An album that actually gains from the raw sound of the mix.
Do not remix it.
It’s dark prog with a punkish attitude.
Love it
Is the Don’t Cry video ironic?
Oops, another one!
… and yet another breakfast post …
Agree on Hall’s piano on Red. I would even say wrong chord on some occasions
Yep, but where is the dark mix of his psychedelic breakfast?
Is he ever going to stop postings clips where he talks about everything about every song on that album?
What did Manu have for breakfast the day he recorded The Court?
Decent version. Like the clean guitar ”riff” on the verse.
Excellent live version
It can happen to me, it can happen to you.
As simple as that.
Guess we won’t take this any further now …
Pretty much spot on.
Better than the last two imo.
But not as C/C
But why is she hammering that piano…? Maybe Liszt did that?
Must be the first time he did not mention growing up listening to Dark Side and Donna Summer ;)
Lyrics on GoF about his tragically deceased wife?
Garden of Flowers on ”Basing Street” is tear-jerkingly beautiful
H on Drive sounds interesting
It starts off so well. But not sure about the way i develops. Need to hear it again … not a fan of the major 7 chord though:)
Both music and lyrics by Ninet?
In what way would it be similar to Floyd? Have only heard it once
This!
In general, fillers or interludes often play an important role in the flow of an album.
White Car on Drama is a great example, IMO.
Good point. Is ”Vera” a filler to some people? I love that one.
Just got off the phone with Trevor. Lots of quantizing going on there in the keys.
But I wish they could add some jazzy prog drums there.
You must be critizising the part where the drums are straight-forward a lot, then. It’s jazz-influenced prog, after all.
Noone says it has to groove. Why does it have to be as weird as possible?
Rhetorical question.
Just stating my opinion. Like everybody else here. I find the first track interesting, by the way....
Or clever?
The bitterness is a part of the album. Just like there are happy albums.
Yes, what is the point of making it so tricky that it does not groove? But sure, I guess that is what he was after.
The intro - especially the piano - is so stiff
The drum parts are so overplayed.
Remove the fillers and the album will be a completely different thing. Same with the Lamb.
The fillers add to the quality of the album as a whole
Agreed.
What happened?
No.
Thomas Dolby Surround.
Fascinating!
My favorite is Insurgentes, and album that really stands out. I am not that impressed by SW:s poppier stuff (Chris Martin is better at that! :-)
Thanks for presenting interesting...
Not really no.
I remember how surprised was when the album was released. Because SW had been talking about how much 80s pop such as Tears for Fears and Peter Gabriel influenced him during the...
The bluesy rock on the title track? The arena rock on Nowhere Now? The guitar riffing on Same Asylum? The guitar riffing on People who eat?
I hear guitar based arena rock.
Haha! Put on your worn-out denim jeans and grab your telecaster and play some tasty rock riffs!
Well, I think To the Bone is the low point.
It’s denim rock.
Barry visited the studio when the band recorded Dark Side. But they did not recognize him.
”Barry” on The Wall is about him. ”Barry, Barry - what has become of you?”
Unless everything was prerecorded, the last tour shows that he still can sing.
But I guess he feels way more comfortable in the low register.
Still, what would be the point of making it sound almost the same as the original?
And I guess he does not care of people want to listen to it. He probably needs to do this for some reason.
Love that drum sound.
Totally unnecessary.
One notable things is the harder punch in the drums. Not needed at all, IMO.
Love the Monks! And Alan’s loose playing. But I also like the riffy hardrock part. Great song!
Interesting, where is the AOR in Hearts most apparent?
I think the whole album peaks in the Hearts guitar solo.
Is he releasing a new single every time there is a full moon?
Floyd is my favorite band of all time, but Rick’s solo stuff does not do much for me I’m afraid.
Love that guitar tone
So far I haven’t felt like listening all the way to the end of any of these songs. Well maybe one.
It’s likely that Money will be the ”worst” song on the album. The rest i so much more laidback. And that will suit this sound so much better
